Default Need 72 Chevelle LS1 help please

What's going on everyone, new to the site and hoping for some help, got a 72 Chevelle that I'm converting to ls1, I'll post pics throughout the project, here's my questions, I'm getting a ls1 and t56 6 speed out of a 02 trans am and I'm trying to figure out if It will be a turn key since it's coming out running from the trans am with all accessories and wiring, and also will this motor sit in the same location as my 350, I know I need new mounts for the motor and a fuel tank but shouldn't I be able to use all the stuff from the trans am, am I going to run into any major problems, my Chevelle is auto now but I already got the pedal setup out of a donor Chevelle, thanks for any help I really appreciate it.

This section of the forum will help you out much more. There is lots of reading to help steer you where you need to go: https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids-28/

To answer your question about engine location that depends on what engine mounts and oil pan you use. You also may or may not have to move the engine mount frame stands to get it where you want.

This is a basic swap, done often. You will need to have the VATS removed from the PCM and possibly a few other mods. Do yourself a favor and use a B-body tank, search the site for specifics, many of us have done this with great success. You may need to do some moving around of accessories, again search the forum. Chances are that unless you plan to notch the K-member the F-body pan won't fit. Several of us have used alternatives. My guess is that you can use the F-body radiator and fans with a bit of fabrication(if you have them).
I think the big key is to search the forum for similar swaps and make sure that you pay attention to the recipes of parts that play well together. In any event you are making a substantial upgrade that you will never regret.

Yeah, A bodies and mustangs have been beaten to death at this point (which is a good thing). Finding a build thread you like and copying it will make things easier.

OK great, thanks a lot for the replies I really appreciate it, I will definitely check out the other forums as well, I was planning on getting the Holley oil pan, and I also heard that I will. Need to get the engine harness and computer sent out to be re cut and to program it, Any info on that situation, thanks

Depends on how in depth you want to go. You can buy tuning software and do the tuning yourself, but it isn't real cheap, or you can find a local tuner to do it for you. You could also get a mail order tune to get it running (deleting VATS and such) and just run it that way, but a live tune will be better. As for the harness, if you're good with wiring and a soldering iron, the harness can be done by using the info at www.lt1swap.com, he has all the wiring info you'll need. Good luck with it and welcome to the forum.

What ls1nova71 said. I did my own harness, on the second generation now. It is really pretty easy.

I just swapped the new Holley 302-2 pan in. fits great.. more room for the steering and cross member.

As the rest stated. Pretty much a everyday swap now. Just buy what you need or what. Word of suggestion is to go with on vendor if possible. But do some research on the rest of the swaps..

Shop around a little before you pull the trigger at this price...I think you can get it done a little more reasonable than this...

If you have the PCM, lt1swaps does the mods for $75.00 - $100.00. He might even do the harness. Also look at BP Automotive, a site sponsor.

For $650 plus whatever else for a tune you might as well just sell whatever harness you have and get the holley or other aftermarket efi. Hundreds of dollars just to redo some wiring is crazy money.

Default oil pan & mounts

I am putting a 98 ls1 in a 72 chevelle conv. would like to get some guidance on what gm oil pan & baffle to use. also what mounts work best without breaking the bank. some online kits seem overpriced! I am going to use a 4l60e trans. will the stock auto trans crossmember work? thanks joeus1

Most have modified the cross member to work. It will all depend on engine placement to achieve proper angles. Do be aware that the convertible cross member is different than a hardtop. The Holley pan addressed here seems to be one of the best choices, 302-2. Survey some of the build threads for known parts combinations. I used the Dougs mount plates with Energy Suspension pads.

302-2 or CTS-V oil pan. NOT the GM Muscle Car pan.
