Question 4th gen posi in 3rd gen??

I have a 1992 camaro rs that of course has no posi. however I do happen to have a 10 bolt from a 98 trans am in the garage. My question is, could I just put the posi unit in the 3rd gen rear end? or would the whole thing have to go in (of course I would need 4t gen wheels and some brake parts)

Thumbs up

Welcome aboard! Even if you have to scrounge some parts, it'll probably be a lot easier to bolt the 4th-gen rear end into your car than to mess with changing the internals of both rearends. The 4th-gen rear is essentially a bolt-in - if memory serves, it's 1/2" wider per side, but other than that, it drops right in.

Anyway, that's the way I'd go - also, if one of the rears is disc, & the other drums, don't forget about making sure you have the correct proportioning valve as well.

Good luck!

They're roughly 2" wider per side

Your late model axles are 28sp like the 4th gen so you can swap the diff over without a fuss, assuming you know how to set up a gear pattern. Simpler solution is to bolt the whole thing in

Thanks guys!
Ok, I decided that I will just put the entire rear end in the car. but I do need an axle because it is missing one, do I need to buy an axle from an ls car? or can I use any 4th gen axle. also will I need brakes? the car currently has drum brakes.

I'd just swap in the posi unit, its easier as we did this all the time.
But if you keep your gear ratio from your third gen, you need to make sure what gears you have as they made a 2 & 3 series posi carriers.

Get an axle from its matching year split, V6 or V8 doesnt matter
93-97 and 98-02. Slight length change
3rd gen axles will not work at all

If using the entire axle, original brake type does not matter. Grab a disk brake prop valve for proper bias. Drum valves send much higher bias to the rear because drums require more pressure than disk setups

All said & done, just swap the posi unti into your 3rd gen rearend.
Easier and cheaper.
