Default Used vs new 4l80e for lq4 3rd gen firebird

Ok guys I need some opinions on this, right now I can get a really good deal on a good working 4l80e with only 12,000 miles on it, so I'm debating on getting it and running it or buying a rebuilt one. Would I be better off getting a brand new rebuilt one or run with this one? I'm on a budget and the used one really would help that out, it will be going in a 84 firebird with a 6.0 in it, I'm planning on making 4-500 hp/tq and it will be mainly street car I don't plan on racing it much.
Thanks all for your input

Ive tuned a few 4l60e tht are living at the hp level. One is being sprayed with 150 shot every weekend. Its living for the time being.

For your setup the stock uses 80e will do great! Add a hd-2 shift kit if u choose.

Step away from the computer/phone & get the 4L80E already!! (From another LS-thirdgen guy.)

If it actually IS "a really good deal on a good working 4l80e", then you need to jump on it "like a pit bull on a pork chop", & THEN tell us all about it, OK??

(And for whatever it's worth, I really would like to know how it fits in the transmission tunnel...)

Thanks for all the replies guys I was up north for the weekend and had bad signal so I couldn't check the thread. Its supposedly a good working tranny but I don't know if it really has 12,000 miles on it or the guy is saying that to sell it, its from a junkyard that gives me a 90 day warranty but I won't be trying it in the car within 90 days so I'll be stuck with it if its bad or blows up. I plan on putting an hd3 kit in so its a manual valve body. My dilemma is save $600 and get this tranny or spend the money to get a remanufactured tranny, I'd still do the shift kit no matter what route I take. I'm on a budget but I don't think this is the best place to skimp out so I get spending the money, what do you guys think?

without knowing the quality of a the mechanic who's doing the rebuild i'll take a known running tranny every time.

see if they'll pop the pan for you. if there are no chunks of steel or a 1/4" of friction material in the pan send it

Thats a good point, I'm either between ordering one from monster or this one if anyone has input about them, I'll ask if they can take the pan off. Its a good ways away so they're going to ship it to me and I would only get pictures so its kind of a gamble still but I'll ask the guy.

Might not be a bad idea to look up the name of the place online & see what reviews you can find (if any). Good luck!

I actually did look them up and they had mixed reviews but mainly good, and in Wisconsin, they aren't hard to come by my issue is finding a good deal, my friend has a friend who works at a place that remans 80es, he can get me one for $1,000 then I'd just throw the shift kit and converter on, should I just go this route? Its a bit cheaper than monster but its this or the $600 "low mile" tranny, I think I'm leaning towards the remanufactured trans for piece of mind.

thats pretty fair price for a "reman" (usually this means "just new frictions" in my neck of the woods)

Agreed, Very fair price. Especially if that's without the core charge.

Yeah I figured it wasn't bad but they need a core, I have a th350 core I probably won't ever build so I was thinking of asking if they would take that, if they would I'll probably go that route. If not I'll either
