Default Which cam Timing set? LS2 engine with LS1 ECM

Just wanted to ask a short question:

I will be using a stock LS2 camshaft in my 416ci LS2, but I will be using an LS1 ECM to control everything, now I know that I can use the ls2 camshaft with with LS1 computer but it needs a different cam gear(x1) to keep the operation of the CMP sensor now what I can't figure out is exactly what timing set I need to get the x1 cam gear and that will mate up to a LS2 engine front without problem?

I have tried searching for the info but I can't seem to pick up exactly what I should be looking for or asking for!

You need the x1 cam gear, which will fit just fine. You need the LS2 timing cover as well since it has provision for the cam sensor. You also need a 24x reluctor wheel on the crankshaft if you are using the LS1 computer.

Hi rao, thanks for the reply - okay so does that mean that I buy an LS1 timing set like one of these {Link}?

See my problem is knowing what the x1 cam gear translates into when I am looking what parts I need to order.

I already have the LS2 timing cover and my crankshaft will have the x24 wheel installed.

You don't want the part in the link.

Right cam gear:

Wrong cam gear:

You can see the part numbers for both of them here - http://www.enginepartsplus.com/pdf/G...20Hardware.pdf just scroll down.

Thanks rao, I understand now what I was missing. Without really knowing what I was looking at I thought it was something to with the gearing on the sprocket not the ridges on the sprocket surface!

That pdf is very useful!

Thanks again!

No problem, glad to help. I had the same problem with one of my motors, I can assure you that if you use the wrong cam gear the motor won't run all that great .

The correct cam gear was used for only a short period of time, when the LS2 was introduced and before the new 58x computers were introduced.

What ECU are you using with the 5.3L? Does it have a 24 tooth crank trigger wheel? If your cam sensor is in the block then you may need the timing gear. I believe the LS2 cams are not machined for a cam sensor in the rear of the cam.

Watch out.
Stock LS2 camshafts used to be a 3 bolt core, which were fine for bolting on a 1x camgear ( 12576407), but in recent years have changed to a large single bolt cam core. I don't believe a 1x camgear yet exists that can bolt to a stock single bolt cam core.

Single bolt 4x (latest version of LS2)
