Default Ls1 Temp Sensor Adapter

Okay, i have a headache now from looking through so many post and not finding anything. I have a 2001 LS1, its going into a 1972 Chev Pickup. I want to know what kind of adapter i need to use the stock, 1/2 inch thread water temp sender from the 72. Any thoughts?

My last resort is drilling and tapping.

Is there a similar sending unit with a smaller thread size? thanks alot.

The PCM needs to see the stock LS1 sensor, so you need to keep that one in the driver's side head. I drilled and tapped the passenger head and put an original sensor there. There's a company that makes new sensors that put out the same response as the originals but for some reason I can't think of the name right now.

Pain? I pulled the head off and drilled it on the bench. Make sure you don't get any aluminum shavings in the coolant passages. I haven't had any problems and my car's been running over 4 years.

I have seen that adapter, but im not sure how accurate that would be, having it pulled out and away from the engine...

I was about to ask this same question. I guess the chance of using a mechanical temperature gauge on these engines isn't there is it?

Is your original sensor for a gauge or an idiot light?

67 to 72 Chevy truck use an idiot guage, meaning there are no temprature numbers on the guage, just C and H. The ls1 runs hotter than the original small blocks (180) so the temp guage will run closer to the H side of the guage. I put a resistor in line between the sender and guage to bring the needle back to the center of the guage. Just something to think about, dosen't hurt anything, it's just a little unnerving watching the temprature rise like that.

Another trick is to drill out and tap the block heater plug to fit the sensor. The plug is in the block just below the stock temp sensor.

I like your thinking! How did you re-tighten the brass plug into the blog since the allen head center is now gone? I was thinking maybe a hole on either side and a spanner wrench.

I have the driver's side to computer, the passenger head has a stock 98 senor in it, which goes to my original guage as an idiot meter (if it pegs, something is wrong, otherwise its says 220 is normal =D) and I also have an autometer water temp guage, the sending unit is tapped into the top of the thermostat housing. its kind of neat to be able to see water temp coming in and block temp at the same time.

I soldered the three leftmost pieces together. No leaks that way and goes in with a standard wrench.

I should add putting the sensor there wasn't my idea. Stole the idea from a swap kit made by John's Cars in Texas.

You can drill and tap the top of the water pump. Though now my issue is that I added a Meziere electric water pump which I can't drill/tap so I don't have a guage. mechanical guage is too big for the head.
Friend suggested getting a data logger/scanner guage (can't think of the name of them) that might give the water temp from the computer?

Not sure this is the answer to the first question but others maybe...
Autometer makes adapters for the stock hole 12mm x 1.5 to a 1/8 NPT output for aftermarket gauge hookups. PN 2277. You can leave the stock one in the drivers side head and put the aftermarket in the pass side.
They also make one for the oil pressure sensor if your interested PN 2268.

might help someone

that kit is the same one i used, my local parts store had a package of several metric to domestic adapters, I used the 1/8 one and picked up a different sensor that is supposed to be rated the same as my stock one
