took the car out on the road yesterday, i bet we drove 30miles or more. runs good. the fuel transition is very smooth. with a 2nd gate is now levels out at 7.5psi of boost. our local 1/8th mile track opens april 2nd and we hope to have the car there. i am sure it will take a few trips to get it dialed in but i think it is going to be a real runner.

it has been a long project, limited funds have stalled the progress at times. cant wait to see how it does at the track. this is the most "race car" type of car we have done. power glide, tubeuler front end, mini tub with big tires.

anyone know the quickest stock longblock record?

9.3x@146 for the red firebird with the kytp turbo set up
9.49@??? for your guys fairmont
9.51@147 for my 6.0 twin 70mm set up.

those are the fastest ones as far as I am aware... for 1/4 mile at least.

awesome project can't wait to see how it runs down the track. there's an s10 on YB that has been 5.8x? with a 6.0 with L92 heads and a decent sized cam with a pt88. can't wait to see how this one compares

Default Similar build!

Great build. I am starting a similar build with Mega squirt and 6010 MSD box real soon. How much does this car weigh?

With the MSD 6010 box can you control spark dwell timing for the LQ4 truck coils? My "How to build LS1/LS6 v8's" by Will Handzel says you have to lengthen the dwell timing on boosted engines at higher RPMs, but keep it near stock level at low RPM to avoid overheating the coils. Have you ever run into this issue?

I will be starting and posting my build in about 1 month. I will also be trying for the LQ4 stock bottom end (with cam only) record as well in the 1/8th (1/8th will help it live longer). I may try a few glory runs in the 1/4 just to see how fast she goes.

My weopon of choice for cars is a 2500 lb 1985 mustang PSCA 8 second race car roller I picked up recently for a steal at 3 grand. I was going to build my 1988 hatch but I couldnt pass this deal up. I will run a glide, borg warner S400 75MM turbo, air to air intercooler, pump gas with meth injection. Car is mini tubbed with drag radials. Similar car with a 351W ford (forged bottom end), AFR 205 heads and the same blow thru carbed S400 turbo ran mid 5's. Hopefully the 317 heads will be able to flow enough to get my car into the high or mid 5's.

I will be watching this build with great anticipation as well once the track opens!

the msd box does not have adjustable dwell that i know of but we have never ran into an issue. i have ran into that with the stock computer and just turned up the dwell a little and it cleaned things up.

i dont know on the weight. i would guess around 3000lbs. 2500lbs would be nuts.

Default LS6 cam fit

Hi parish8,

Yes, car will be 2500 lbs and with my 195lbs about 2700 with me in it.

I was thinking of running the 02 and up LS6 cam 204/218 @ 050 duration and .555/.551 lift with a 117.5 lobe seperation. I know every article on this subject says to always check valve to piston clearance in a cam swap. But I was hoping to just slide this cam into my stock bottom end LQ4, align the timing marks and go without popping the heads off the motor. The LS6 .555/.551 is about max lift for these stock rockers to center on the valve tips anyways.

My local cam grinders 20 yr old son claims lift only, not duration is important for valve to piston clearance. This doesnt sound right.

I was toying with the idea of using a turbo cam with the same LS6 .551/.555 lift. Think I can get away with just sliding in a LS6 cam or similar spec'd (same lift) turbo cam without removing the heads and checking valve to piston clearance? I know there are no guarantees, but sometimes cam/engine fit combos are just known.

we have ran a 2002 ls6 cam in an otherwise stock lq4 with no issues. i ran a 590/590 230/232 cam in a stock lq4 also. not sure on exact cam specs but it was in that range and we had no issues. never had the heads off the motor.

Many people including me have run over 600 lift with stock rockers, it does require the correct length pushrod and the correct valve spring etc but it is easily do-able.

Default Stock block with cam valve to piston clearance

Thanks tirefryin_s10,

So a cam with a .571/.575 lift or even a 600 lift cam should slide right into a stock block LQ4 6.0 with no valve to piston clearance issues (stock 317 heads)? If so great, I do not want to remove the heads if I dont have to for checking valve to piston clearance. Is this .571/.575 lift considered a medium cam? The duration is 228/232 with the .571/.575 lift. I noticed the specs on your 5.3 (before the 6.0) were a bit milder. I think most of the articles and books tend to be very conservative when they are discussing usable cams on a stock block motor with stock heads and rockers The books say at higher lifts then the LS6 cam the stock rocker tip wont center on the valve stem, but obviously this hasnt been a major issue with you.

Sorry parish8, not trying to hijack your thread. Both this car and tirefryin_s10's mustang, and even your fairmont project cars have been a major inspiration! Will be watching both these cars and starting my build & thread soon.

car is running great. 1st trip to the track. we were trying to stay out of trouble so he was letting off before the end. looking at the slips we are guessing the car would have run a 6.60-6.70 last night  . no brake, no 2 step, no boost controler, only 8psi.

cant wait to push it. his best 60' was a 1.59. we hope t see some 1.2x's out of it. boost was 8psi, we expect to push it to 14+psi. one of the goals with the car is to try and bust a 8.99 with a stock longblock.

vids are big files.

mike got a harness and we were going to hit up the track last weekend but it rained all weekend. we were hoping for 6.50's or so with with no boost controler, no two step, no tranny brake.

since it rained he took his car apart. spool is going in along with some higher gears, something like a 323 but i am not sure of that. looks like the next trip to the track we will be trying out the trans brake and 2 step.

not budget like the fairmont. on that car we went as cheap as we could.

mike has some money in his car. he has been keeping track. seems like he said $12k before the last round of mods. i dont know if that includes the price of the car but he has had it since he was 12 years old so i am guessing it doesn't.
