Default MAP Sensor + Carb

Do I need a MAP sensor for my carb setup? Running MSD box, and can't see that there is a plug in for it. Do I have to tap my new alum. intake

Doesn't the MSD box come with instructions?
Does it say anything about a MAP sensor?
I wouldn't think it would be needed, but I hate carbs, so I wouldn't know.

If you want the MSD to adjust timing based on load, then you need the MAP sensor.

the MAP sensor is only for part-throttle under load vacuum advance. It is no necessary. I drove my setup a couple hundred miles without on. Not a huge different, just helps your plugs stay a little cleaner and supposed to give you a little better fuel mileage.

If you have the Victor Jr intake, there is a hole right under the carb mounting pad that is 1/2" NPT (I think) tapped. You can screw in a 1/2" NPT to hose barb fitting there. The 6010 box should have come with a bracket to mount the MAP sensor to one of the carb studs, or you could make one yourself. It's a simple bracket.

yeah 1//8" npt, the other hole is a 3.8" npt. I used a 2" long piece of 1/8" npt brass pipe, male on both ends, threaded the one side into the victor jr intake, the other side i slipped a 5/16" vac line over and hooked it to the MAP sensor. I monted my map sensor on one of the studs on the heater box. My map sensor was from a grand prix though. They all do the same thing just make sure you get a 3 wire one with a connector.

Heres a pic i have of it without the Demon on it. Not that that would change the MAP sensor location though. Its got the green connector in the upper left part of the engine bay.

If you look at the bottom of the intake you can see where I drilled and tapped it, 3/8 npt I think. GMPP carb intake. I got a brass plug and drilled that out to accept the MAP sensor. I cut a few threads off of the brass plug so it set flush with the base of the inside of the intake.

Where did you get your intake bolts?

As far a I know you only need to provide a vacuum source from the intake, weather it be the fitting from the top, or from the bottom its measuring the same vacuum. I am running the MSD 6012 box and it seem's to read it fine. And to answer your other question the bolts came with my intake (GMPP L 92)

I just connected mine to a vaccum port on the base of the Holley carb. Just make sure you use the lower port. I then made a tab out of flat sheet metal that I bolted to a coil pack bolt. Holds the sensor just fine.
