Don't know for sure without checking it, but 9 times out of 10 that kind of damage is caused by a loose or bad connection right at the point of damage. The loose connection results in high resistance right there, which generates heat. It becomes a viscious circle of higher resistance / more heat, until something gives way or burns up. If the connection is properly repaired you should have no more trouble.
That leaves a 1 in 10 chance that something else is intermittently shorting or causing high current draw, but I doubt it.
