Default Project: Wreck (LS1 6-Speed Fiero)

Well, I just picked up my new project. I already have a 6-speed tranny on the way - it's an F40 6-speed from a 2006 G6 GTP. I'm still looking around for the LS1. This is going to be a frame-off restoration, so I have plenty of time to find one in the meantime.

But, if anyone has a running or non-running LS1/LS6 in the central NY area, PM me. We may do some business.

It's actually 2 cars - one assembled & one disassembled. Here's some pics:

always figured you could get an entire fiero in the back of a 1ton!

Good luck with the swap!

You should do a kit since you will be in there anyway!! I've always wanted to do a Diablo Fiero with an LS1/930 tranny setup!!

We're planning on a twin turbo setup, but it may just end up being NA due to the fact that the F40 tranny is rated at 300lb-ft, and A TT may prove to be ridiculously unnecessary in a Fiero.

Here's a little video link of "The Wreck" taking a spin from the driveway into the garage. Also are some pics of my progress. I haven't gotten much done yet, besides taking the junk frame to the yard after pulling the motor & tranny. I got $35.40 for the scrapper for 1180 lbs.

Project: Wreck test drive.

Disassembly has begun. I removed both rear strut towers so I can drop out the engine cradle. Removal of the towers isn't necessary, but the frame is going out to be powdercoated and a new Koni suspension will be fitted, so I'll try to sell the stock ones. Anyways, here's some pics of the progress.

I'm having some trouble removing the rear cradle bolts. It feels like there's a nut on the other side, but it's damn near impossible to see through the frame rails to tell. I got frustrated and work has stopped for today.

I was trying to remove the rear left cradle bolt to drop the subframe, and when I broke the torque on the bolt, it broke the weld on the nut plate on the other side. So I had to cut a hole in the frame to clamp the nut plate. I tried using a hole saw on a drill at first, but that was almost as useless as a girlfriend, so I hooked up the high-speed air cutter and that did it in about 2 minutes. After I put the vise grips on it, it came right out with ease.

So, in short, the motor gets pulled tomorrow, along with what's left of the interior most likely.

Here's some pics of the hole I cut:

I got the engine pulled out last night. The cradle's also out. I also started stripping the interior. Here's some pics. The third one is of the right side quarter area of the frame that needs to be patched. This is the only bad part of the whole frame.

This is a picture of the Fiero rear with everything removed. As I looked at it, something just didn't look right. It took me awhile, but I finally figured it out.

Take a look at the first attached picture here. Something is wrong... see if you can find it. Then look at the second one to get an explanation if you give up.

Damn that was wrong. Just wrong.
Funny, if you have a dark sense of humor.

The nuts were near my car because I thought it'd be funny to post here afterwards.

Does no one have a sense of humor anymore? Come on; nuts are ALWAYS funny.

Except when they're not. Sorry man, but that's just puerile & dumb.

Good luck with the build.
