I drive a 1990 Nissan 300ZX 2+2. It was a normally aspirated car originally. Definiely not enough power! I had modified nearly everythign that i could and it still wasnt enough...so i went with the LS1... a perfect motor for the Z

I apologize for being lazy, meaning I haven't read the entire thread, but I was wondering how difficult was it to use the stock tranny/driveshaft/rear differential? Unless you changed everything to match up to the LS1. Is it still RWD? Or did you make like a Subaru WRX and went AWD?

Well...being that the stock 300ZX transmission is a good deal smaller than the 4L60E tranny...it would have been very difficult to mate the stock one up to the LS1 motor. So I went ahead and used the 4L60E transmission...i then was able to use a yoke from an f-body driveshaft and mated that to the stock 1pc driveshaft i was originally running. It fit perfectly. So i kept the stock driveshaft length and i also kept the stock rearend. Nissan used the same rearend in their racing applications as they are good up to somethign like 1000rwhp. VERY strong. The axles will break before the rearend does. And it is also geared very well. Its at 4.13:1 stock. :0) And the Z was and still is RWD. It wouldve been extremely difficult to make an AWD setup for the Z.

Ah, just wondering. Thank you. Would it be possible to use a Nissan rear-end, like the 300ZX or similar in my Camaro? Would it be cheaper than going with a Ford 9 or Moser 12? Also, because my car is a daily driver, would my stock A4 be ok or should I consider upgrading to the 4L60E?

you wouldn't wwant to use the Nissan rear end.
It is an IRS unit and would require much more time and money than upgrading to a ford 9"

AWESOME swap! I've always wanted a 90-96 Z, but they stopped making them by the time I could afford one. I've been thinking of doing this swap for about a year now. Always thought this would be an excellent platform to start with (bullet-proof rear diff is always a plus). With a 6-speed, this would be a kick *** track car.

A few questions for you if you don't mind...

What did you do about gauges and such? Where did you source the oil pan from & how much was it? Were you able to keep the PS & AC? Are you still planning on selling the procedure on how to put it all together?

What did you do about gauges and such?
As far as gauges, i wanted to go for the easiest possible solution. So i modified the dash to accept the F-body gauge cluster and it actually looks very good. The only way you can tell that I am not running the stock gauges is if you look at them straight on.
Where did you source the oil pan from & how much was it?
I found the Holden oil pan (front sump) from someone online that had purchased one and decided not to use it. You can go used and search some of the parts people on the board...or you can go new and see about getting one through GM as Holden is the Australian GM. Also ask around on the Australian ls1 boards.
Were you able to keep the PS & AC?
I wasnt running AC/PS originally so that issue wasnt a concern of mine. In the manual I wrote, i did do a write up on how to hook up the AC/PS if you did have it. It can be done and it isnt the hardest part of the swap.
Are you still planning on selling the procedure on how to put it all together?
Yes i am :0) I accept paypal to the Swmmr4u@aol.com address... the cost is 42.50 shipped.
Let me know!

Is there any way around cutting the firewall? If not how much cutting and fabrication must be done? A closer pic would be great.

well thats an awesome swap! im looking at doing one with my LT1. whats this about the firewall? my lt1 is a freshly built 383 with forged internals and i wanna spray it... so i also have all the bolt-ons (lts, intake, yada) .. i was thinking i guess ill fab up some turn downs or somethin for an exhaust.. but is there any problems with this install that you would advise the next guy to watch out for.. like im not sure if i should use my 4L60e for instance because i wanna spray and not to mention the motor itself can probably break the tranny. but im getting sick and tired of this old crusty camaro i got(94z).. maybe i could shed a few pounds and get a new look..? let me know what u guys think..

a) this thread is from 2003
b) the original poster has not had activity since 2006
c) SEARCH, this topic has JUST been covered:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-swaps/658992-ls1-93-300zx-will-fit.html

As far as your transmission, you could get it to fit and just build the 4l60. You could also swap to a T56, or a TH400 if you wanted to stay auto.

Default 300zx v8 swap

I looking to begin my v8 swap in a 1990 300zx NA with a 5speed tranny.
Looking to to do the same but use a Lq4 and swap to the corvette intake on the Lq4 and to use the 300zx transmission with an adapter plate.
Looking to do this on a budget that is why I choose the Lq4 as i can get much cheaper that the LS1.
You guys got any pointers or see any flaws with my plans.
