Default Miata differential upgrade options for LS1..

Besides the 8.8 setup everyone is using, are there some factory options for differentials? Will RX7 or RX8 diffs work? Do they bolt in? I'm just curious what kind of options I might have. I'm probably about to trade my Msutang for a Miata, and a good friend of mine just gave me a pile of LS1 parts, so I obviously have only one choice....SWAP TIME!!!!

The best route is the rx7 turboII LSD. Not only does it bolt into the stock location, but has mounting points for a torque arm

Where are the mounts on a t2 diff for a torque arm?

You might be thinking of an FD diff which came with a torque arm, turbo 2 diffs in the FCs didnt have torque arms

This is what I have. 86-88 (I think) 'TurboII LSD'.

There are three mounting points for a torque arm whether rx7s originally had them or not.

It might be a t2 diff but those 3 bolts arent for a torque arm. THey are what the front diff mount connects to.

You could use the bolts with a torque arm though prob, as it works similarly

TII aluminum housing + 1988 929 carrier with 3.73 gears + TII diff = direct bolt in factory rear end with limited slip and 3.73 gears.

Are there any gear sets available for these (numarically lower) in the 2.70-3.30 range?

Who has one in their car?

So why arent more people running this setup in the Rx7s?

Looks like the issue would be that the diff is shorter thus the rear flange will hit the rear subframe.

Exactly. You are also faced with the other weak points, such as the stock stub axles and CV axles. However, I feel that in a light weight Miata, those weak links would not be so apparent. I think that a 929 carrier with the 3.73 gear will live a happy life in a Miata, mostly because Miatas are so traction limited. Wheel hop will also need to be controlled.

The only other ring and pinion that is available for TII rears is a 4.33.

The guy who said these only come with 4.33 gearing is wrong. We tested the ratio of mine and it was 4.10

Foreign models had the 4.33 option. I can give you a Mazda part number if you are interested. Well here is a link for some info for everyone.
