A stock 5.3, ls1 etc will run on a 98 ecu if its matched to the same year harness, I believe 98 is the only offset ecm as they were the first year, if you can go 99 or newer on both harness and ecm, also all you do is locate the wires and move then individually, I did my own on my 93 z28 with a 2001 harness and 99 ecm just by reading and printing the merv's guide a couple years back.
