Based on your description, I think I made the same cut into the sheet metal that you did for the shifter.
a dead hard hook with the t56 and some dr will punish the rear and may even break something.

What kind of satin black are you using? I went back with chalkboard on the miata... lame.
On the paint, watch out for all the enamel paints. They are impossible to blend together and wet sand if you are still shooting for a satin finish. Any time you start wet sanding it, get ready to make it glossy. That is why i'm just going back to the chalkboard; easy to blend layers, easy touchup, durable, etc.
Give the Miata a month and i hope to get out on the road. Maybe you won't have your car torn apart then.
