Default Data Connector Location

If I understand correctly all programming and computer queries are done through the data line connector residing under the dash just right of the steering column. I cut one out of a wreck with about 6 inches of wire. Where did you hook it up to? I'm in the process of tracing down the connections to the PCM using a schematic. Did you hook it up directly to the PCM and is the connector in the engine compartment?

You want it within reach as you sit in the drivers seat. You will need to hook up a minimum of 3 wires. One is to the PCM (serial data), the second is to ground and the third is to power. There are two grounds on some DLC connectors (pin 4 & 5) I think. They can both be hooked up to the same ground. I also had another wire on pin 9. This was a serial data connection to the EBCM (ABS) on my 96 Impala SS. I needed to maintain it for ABS servicing.

I don't have all of the pin numbers with me at the moment, but I can provide them if someone does not chime in.

Thanks I have the PCM pinouts in my schematic in my manual. Wasn't sure if the PCM went directly to the connector or through something like the BCM. Didn't know about the common grounds. The DC power to the connector is 12V correct? Is the reason the connector is always mounted in the passanger compartment is because some of the codes are acquired from the PCM while you're driving? Again many thanks.

You need to make sure you connect the serial data from you PCM to the correct pin on the DLC so you can connect with AutoTap, EFILive, LS1Edit... A service manual for any ODBII vehicle should identify the DLC pinouts. I was going to get them from a 2002 fbody manual I used for my swap.

Yes - 12v > this is what will power a Tech I/II that a dealer would connect or a Hypertech power programmer you might want to connect. I use LS1Edit myself.

The mounting location (accessible from drivers location) is mandated by government ODBII requirements. I do use EFILive to monitor the engine while driving for tuning purposes as well, so it is handy.
