where to get a oil cooler?

Default where to get a oil cooler?

i started taking my motor apart and i noticed that i have to run an oil cooler and since my 79 is not equipped with one i need to know where to find one. im guessing everybody putting these motors in older vehicles has had the same issue. do i buy one new or go to the junkyard?

you don't *have* to run an oil cooler. that being said, i've got an oil cooler and lines that connect to the port above the oil filter from an '00 LQ4 if you're interested. make an offer.

if i dont run one where do i get a block off for the ports? would it cause me problems later

I am curious what makes you think you need an oil cooler? Which engine are you speaking of?

a LY6 there is a place on the drivers side just above the oil pan where 2 lines comes out of that went to an oil cooler from factory. i dont know if i need to run one or not thats what im trying to figure out, but if i dont run one, those ports have to be blocked off with something.

If you go to the sticky at the top of the Conversions and Hybrids page for oil pans you will see the part you need to delete the oil cooler. I'm not sure what the name is but it redirects the oil from one port to the other. If you print up the picture and bring it to the dealer they can get it for you. Most people drill and tap it to run a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Or just run the oil cooler cut the ends if the rubber hose and run to an oil cooler mounted in-front of the rad. Won't hurt anything and will help with oil life.

This should be the bypass plate. Take that part number to any GM dealer.

The new plate does not have the provisions for tapping for a fitting. The boss that stuck out the side is no longer there.

Went to pick-and-pull and got an oil cooler form a Suburban from the 80s. A lot of similar years pick up have them too. Connected it with Aeroquip hose and fittings.
Just make sure you do not get a trans fluid cooler, it could not take the pressure!

really? I'd expect a trans cooler would be able to handle 100 psi or so. interesting...

your oil will prob. be a touch hotter, but there are *many* who don't run an oil cooler with no problems (incl. soon-to-be myself when i finally get her fired up).

and off topic, but Bo... I'm going to use your write-up @ pirate4x4 to put together an LQ4/4L60e/np241 setup in my '72 Scout II, so you'll be hearing from me a bunch soon.

I have been looking at swapping to a 6l80. But I would have to change alot with the motor.

I would think about using the 4l80 lot stronger.
