Default ac change over

hello ls1tech fam. im trying to finish my 5.3/4l60e swap but the old a/c compressor and condensor has not removed from the vehicle. i thought that to disconnect the compressor from condensor lines the refigerant must be removed from the system. friends tell me to disconnect and let it seap out. thats what was done at the junkyard. if this is done will will it affect the atmosphere. im not green, but i want to do whats right. by pics you can see that the old ac componets are currently connected. thanks.

Judging by that blue cap on your accumulator, your truck has been changed over to 134a at some time. They say 134a doesn't hurt anything, so if it were mine I'd probably just open a line SLOWLY and put a rag or something over it to keep the oil from going all over, and you should be fine.

The schrader valve is the little valve inside the A/C fittings. They are also found in tire valve stems. The tool to remove them is the same and looks like a 1/8th inch steel dowel with a slot. You can also put a BB or something similar under the cap and tighten it just a little to let the freon out. That was a trick people used to do to flatten tires as well.

So has anyone found a smaller, more compact compressor that they've been able to mount in the stock GM location?

You shouldn't be jacking someone else's thread. That said, S&P makes a kit that mounts a Sanden in the factory (C5) location but moves it inboard 4" and uses the main pulley sheave. Pretty expensive, but if you need the room... Here's a pic:
