i think 800$ is a good price for a complete long block Junk Yard engine.

The junk yard doesn't know if the engine is good or not, ussually only a 30 day warrenty.. but how many of us finish an engine swap in a month to see if the engine is good? Not many!

Well sure its a "good" price, just not a realistic price for my area it seems. I would love to find an LQ4 for $800.

To confuse things further...GM Performance Parts now offers a 454 cubic inch engine that they call the "LSX 454"

I've worked at several major salvage yards as an engine tester and you'd be surprised that they have a pretty good idea about if an engine is good, some do leak down and compression test as well as run em for an hour when possible. When i worked at A-Reliable (LKQ company) they had a fairly sophisticated compression and leak down tester that they used on those engines that were out of front end wrecks, rollovers, or couldnt be started.

All the yards I deal with have a 90 day warranty on complete engines over 100K and a longer one on engines with less miles. Someone like kj598bbc must have a good idea it will last or they wouldn't sell it.

My most recent engine purchase (mid August) was a 5.3 with 103K complete top to bottom (acc. drive belts, wiring, etc.) for $550. The only thing I was missing is a flexplate, bell housing bolts and a car to put it in. It's been in the car for almost 2 months, driven HARD and runs like a champ.

Man salvage asking for a core pisses me off since your not getting a new product! It's used with a limited warrenty and varying miles. Your not getting my "core" salvage only rebuilders when I'm buying a rebuilt or new product get my core.... Sorry for the rant.

They just want the extra cash they get by selling them for scrap.

Default 2010 tahoe 6.0 hybrid

Is there any reason I should steer away from a 2010 6.0 hybrid motor. I am going to change out everything external anyway. I can get one with 3000 miles for1800.00. If the are internal differences I will stay away. Thank you.

I would highly recommend looking around for a good junk yard. I searched on car-parts.com as well and found a couple junk yards that were well organized and had a multitude of 5.3L truck engines.

I ended up buying a complete 80k mile 04' 5.3L from this junk yard for $604 with tax, pulled and put on my trailer complete with accessories, wiring harness, and computer.

http://www.turnerautosalvage.net/

I also had lined up to buy a 4l80E transmission from them, but when we went to pull it that day they had lost it in inventory somehow. No problem the guy calls up a competing junk yard 15 miles away and asks him to sell me one of his 4L80E transmissions for the price he quoted me. Excellent service, everything was pulled and stored in a warehouse, very well organized for a "junk yard".

This is a great list of engines versus vehicle make/model.

I wish I found this sooner when I first started looking months ago.

Add another to the list fellas. The 2013 Vette will have a 5.5 liter 485 hp engine. I haven't seen an rpo yet, but it'll be here very shortly.
