STICKY? Where to get an LSx engine? Look!
MAIN GOAL of this thread: To inform people on WHERE they can find an GM LSx engine for their swap! Not technically the names of all, but where to source a block.
How many times have we heard this: I WANT TO DO A SWAP, BUT CAN'T FIND AN ENGINE!
Well, besides craigslist, Fleabay, and local junk yards, it helps to know what kind of vehicles to look in! Here's a list. Please add if you have more that i missed.

www.car-part.com is an online directory of salvage yards and lists availability of parts by distance and price.
Simply put, the true LSx engine is an aluminum block
The iron blocks are truck engines, but just as capable. Weight difference is only 65lbs
Truck engines short blocks are esentially the same with small differences like:
~Serpentine system (vette's accy's closest, then F-body's, then Trucks stick out far)
~Intake manifolds (trucks' tallest)
~Exhaust manifolds (each application is different, TONS of them out there)
~Sensors. (several differences. With the right harness, and PCM, makes the swap job simple

There are a few Front wheel drive vehicles with LSx engines, but they don't swap easy, and the block castings are different.
Such as:
Impala, Monte Carlo, Buick Lacrosse, and the Grand Prix
Truck motors come in aluminum as well, note L33, L92, L76 amoung a few.
LSx is generic for Gen III/IV motors. So fake LSx is a misnomer. Vortec is much better term for the truck motors.

*Basically the same as an LS1 but with better heads (243 head castings) a more aggressive cam, and LS6 intake manifold make up the power differences.
TRUCK ENGINES - STILL GENERATION III
The truck engines are very much like the LS1/LS6 and are still classified as a Gen III engine. They are mainly iron with the exception of the LM4/L33, and as a result weigh approximately 80+ lbs. more. All the parts from the LS series can bolt on to these engines and is recommended for any swap as the accessories and intake manifold usually fit better from an F-body. The 4.8 and 5.3 can both be punched out to a 5.7 (346 Cubic Inches) simply with a bigger bore (the 5.3) or a bigger bore and the 5.3 crank (in the 4.8's case).

TRUCK ENGINES - STILL GENERATION III
The truck engines are very much like the LS1/LS6 and are still classified as a Gen III engine. They are mainly iron with the exception of the LM4/L33, and as a result weigh approximately 80+ lbs. more. All the parts from the LS series can bolt on to these engines and is recommended for any swap as the accessories and intake manifold usually fit better from an F-body. The 4.8 and 5.3 can both be punched out to a 5.7 (346 Cubic Inches) simply with a bigger bore (the 5.3) or a bigger bore and the 5.3 crank (in the 4.8's case).

The name Vortec should probably be avoided here because it also covers some of the latest releases of the old style, Gen 1 small block. And these engines were also available with EFI, so an EFI Vortec is still a confusing name. To me, a Vortec engine is the old style.

LSx has been used to generically refer to a GenIII/IV engine (LS_, LS#) Then it got a little confusing when GM Released the LSX (iron block,taller deck) for big cubes. Folks also use LSx since they may be using a LQ4 block, L92 heads, L76 intake, corvette accessories, and an F-body oil pan.... or some other Homogolation of engine parts.

I really think this should be a sticky because i, myself, was overwhelmed with the confusion of what kind of vehicle i had to look in to find an LS1 for my swap.

We should also make a list of the head variables as well. Such as the 241's vs the 243's. With a list of valve intake size, cc, and such so you can mix and match a block if you find one with an apropriate head from another source.

GM also used the Vortec moniker for the LS-based, Lingenfelter-prepared, sealed spec engines used in the now defunct ASA Series that ran Monte Carlos, Grand Prixs, a couple of Tauruses & a lone Intrepid. Not that any of that matters to your chart

X 3 ^^^ sdbrown, sticky with the most popular head combos and such, the fact that L92 heads dont fit 5.7 Ls1's, and that 4.8 pistons in a 5.3 raise compression, and a whole bunch of info that the senior members, sponsors, and KNOWLEDGEABLE members chime in with.
