SS LS1/6spd identification

SS LS1/6spd identification I am going to look at a conversion package for my 70 Chevelle this weekend. Supposedly out of a 2000 Camaro SS with under 20K. Are there any external identifiers that set an SS motor apart from a regular Z28 or Firebird? Any tips on what specifically to look at on a LS1 other than a comp test and carbon buildup to verify if it is actually a low mileage motor and the higher output SS version.
I am thinking maybe the code on the computer for an SS identifier? Does any body know what it should be?
He is asking $4,000 (motor/trans/computer/wiring/exhaust manifolds/02s/accessories). He hasn't given me any reason to believe that the motor is anything other than what he has told me it is and is within a 2 hour drive for pickup, but I just want to make sure I know exactly what I am getting.

you get the different rating due to the F-Body, GTO or Vette, Z28 vs SS due to the exhaust and intakes.. and what GM decided to rate out put by for the insurance reason.
If you research the engine specs.. Intake manifolds, heads and cams where the only different from year to year, but were used accross the board for all LS1. Transmission also contributed to different ratings (a bit).
Better low restriction Exhaust were the biggest reason for 305(Z28) vs 320 (SS) vs 345 (Corvette) ratings along with less restrictive air intake setups.

Ok, so what is a fair price to offer the guy? That is kind of what I thought, but I am antsy as hell. 
Every quote I have got from a yard has been in the 3500-6500 range and that is on the system that has all the yards that share inventory in the U.S. Would $3500 be fair or is that still too much. Where are you guys finding them cheaper than this.....take me to your dealer
