A 4l60E and th700r4 are the same transmission. The difference is the 700r4 being the older non computer controlled tranny had a kickdown cable to control line pressure. The E in 4l60e stands for Electronic. The 4L60E is of course electronically controlled via the PCM by way of solenoids in the valve body.
The 4L80E is a modern version of the TH400.
The 700R4 can be very easily built to withstand alot of HP. Replace the sunshell with a $80 "the beast sunshell", Kevlar 2-4 band, Hi-energy clutch and steels, do all the updates to the valve body (8 or so of them) and upgrade the planetary unit and make sure you put a corvette servo in. Not super expensive if the tranny already needs a rebuild anyway, and who wants a well used tranny behind their freshly installed LS anyway?
4L80E is longer than 4L60E/TH700r4 so you will need driveshaft shortened.
Good luck.

I guess every one has there own opinions about the "weak" 700R4......

People have been putting 700r4's behind big horsepower engines since they came out. Like with anything, you gotta know the tricks to making them last.

I'll stick with my "weak" 4L60E since it is smaller and lighter than an '80. Besides the only way my car is going that fast is being towed by his or one like it.
There are at least two sponsors on the board that build 700R4 / 4L60E transmissions that will do what 6L.IROC-Z is doing all day long for reasonable prices. One has a topic in the transmission section cataloging the parts he puts into each unit and the testing it receives before shipping if that tells you anything...
weak weak weak in "stock form"
To expect a mid 80's factory 700r4 to hold up to a modern LS engine HP is just plain dreamland! Even the 85 TPI equipped Corvette 350 was only rated for 245hp. So the 700r4 of that era didnt have to holdup to alot.
I guess I missed the whole " stock form " part... Im not trying to say that a 700r4 or a 60e is stronger than a th400 or a 80e. I just think its funny when people dog the 700r4/60e and say they are weak when mine and plenty others have been 10.2x's and faster at 3550 lbs. They both (700r4/60e & th400/80e) have there places. I have had very good luck with the 700r4 and dont have to have a computer to control it.
