not sure about the 996 but I have a 993 and in the 993 Porsche loves to run many of the lighting circuits +12V through a relay in the relay center. When you turn car off the relay's all disengage. If something is not right with a relay or the supply to them you may have no power for the circuit like it thinks the car is off. Just to name a couple of circuits like this in the 993... Brake lights, headlights, power windows, sunroof etc all controlled by relay in relay center. If no power to relay no power to entire circuit.
Just an idea if you have not checked this.

BTW Porsche & my 993 specifically to me, is the ONLY car i have ever seen where the brake lights and headlights will not work unless the key is in the run position.

i hear you man , these things are wires so strange , kinda makes you wonder what the engineers were thinking when they built it

the odd thing is there is a light that stays constantly on as soon as i turn the light switch on and stays on when i turn it off . i'll keep what you said in mind when i rip into the harness again to trace the wires

Default LS1 ECM help.

Hey guys,
Sorry to tag on to your thread Z but I couldn't figure out how to start my own. I need help with my ECM flash for my 933tt conversion. I know I need to delete the VATs system and the downstream O2 sensors. My car is a 6 speed and I plan on having A/C and cruise control. I think I can use the stock cruise system so I don't think I'll need the VSS signal to the ECM to make the cruise work. I'll need the A/C request signal, but other than that I plan on using the Porsche climate control system. I'd like to keep the EGR system as well. Can anyone flash my ECM for me? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
LC

flashing something that simple should't be that hard , just look up the local fourms in your area and try to find someone with the same model year pcm you are using . or just take it to a local LS shop that has tunning software.

how are you going to run cruise control ? how is it set up on 993's?

If you can't find help locally, as suggested by dirtyz, send it to Frost. Send him a PM. He is a member here & is a professional tuner. He'll take car of you. Good-luck

Thanks guys. Z, I think my car has a separate cruise module, I'm hoping it will stand alone with only a tach pulse from the engine and since I'm running a cable throttle body I was hoping there is a cruise servo (my car didn't come with one, but that's how my 951 works) that I can just hook up. If not, no big deal for now. I'm just ready to drive it. Looking forward to the 6-speed all wheel drive LS1, big step up from my TDI jetta!
Thanks again everyone.

Dirty, your cruise should work just fine as long as you have the brake switch, and both clutch switches. The DME in that generation runs the cruise control, so as long as your keeping the DME happy youll be fine! If you had any info you needed from me shoot me a PM as im not on here nearly as much anymore and have ADD x a billion......

finally some progress

i've been real busy lately and didn't get to work on the car much , but aftger forcing myself i finally got something major done ( well major in my book ) ; i got my *** in the car and started tracing all the brake wiring , and finally got the tail lights to work
it turns out i had the clutch switch and the brake switch mixed up , as well as having the bracket that holds the switch bent out of place which caused the brake switch not work .

all i have to do now is replace the relay/flasher thingy for the turn signals , i remeber taking it out a while back and now i have no clue where i removed it from
i also have to find where i put the brake light brackets ,,,,, i know i got some new ones to replace the broken ones on the car , but i could not find them anywhere! damn mice

and i found out another interesting "anomily" with this porsche : the brake lights don't work if the ignition is not on i don't know why but it could be due to the wiring job i done

i also started putting the interior back in and should have it all buttoned up soon

so next up should be finishing installing the interior and seats, fixing the clutch master cylinder and bleeding it , swapping the TR8 plugs to TR6 , install the headlight bulbs, and maybe slap the rear bumper on and finally get to drive the thing .

Awesome... I guess if you would have pushed in the clutch the brake lights were working fine.. lol as for the brake lights not working unless the ignition is on... that's what i was trying to describe in my post above.. apparently not very well... many circuits in Porsche's are like this. It has nothing to do with YOUR wiring and everything to do with Porsche's. I was surprised as my 993 is the first car i have EVER seen where the brake lights would not work with the car off. Totally normal by design. The whole brake lights circuit and a few other circuits (Headlights/windows etc) are controlled by various a relay's in the relay/fuse box center. Not sure why they do it this way... Glad you got it working.
