Default Alternator

Where can I get a (4 pin) plug for my alternator. It is a stock (105 amp) Delphi type for an 05 truck. Also, which pin is the exciter...my (pin) options are P L I S??

I am being told that the L pin is the exciter. Is that the only connection I need on the 4 pin plug for a carb'd application???

Can I connect the L pin/wire directly to my ignition (hot) circuit on a non-PCM conversion??
I have read that the L/exciter needs anywhere from 5-8 and 10-11 volts (depending on whose info your getting).
A connection to my ignition circuit is more than either of them.

I ran into the same issue as my painless harness did not have the connector for the alternator. After a little research it appears if you need to install an inline resistor in the exciter wire if you are going directly to your ignition circuit. I found multiple references to AC Delco PN 8078 but I can't find that on AC Delco's web site. I called Painless tech support and they recommended a 85ohm/10w resistor, commonly available at Radio Shack. I have yet to purchase either.

That is some very good info...especially since Radio Shack is probably a whole lot cheaper than GM/AC Delco.

i ran a wire to the L terminal on my alternator. i put a 470 ohm resistor before the terminal and it charges 13.5-14 volts at idle.

What made you go with 470 or did you "just give it a shot" and it worked???

Default Resistor

I see where it's recommended to use the 470 ohm resistor, but no one has listed what the wattage for them should be. So can someone let the rest of use know which one to get at Radio Shack?

Wink

I'd like to discourage folks from using the 470 ohm resistor. IF the alternator goes bad and they do go bad, you have no way of telling till you get stranded beside the road with a completely dead battery and not knowing what's causing it. Instead use a standard 12 volt idiot light in series with the "lamp = L" terminal and switched +12volts. Mount the light on your dash or some place where you can see it. F-body wiring harnesses have the PCM monitoring batttery voltage via red PCM connector pin #15. Be sure to enable teh PCM monitoring via the PCM file.
