Default F-body Radiator Mount Question....

Anybody have a picture of how the F-body radiator mounts at the core support, particularly at the bottom. I am going to fab a mount in my next build, and need to get it straight in my head...

Thanks in advance,
T,

It really doesnt "mount" to the top or bottom. The bottom just rests in a channel on each side that looks like a U that is padded with rubber. The top is kind of the same way where the upper shroud locks on the top corners of the radiator and bolts to the core support. Here is a lame diagram of what it looks like. You could easily fab up some lower brackets that can be bolted on for it to sit in.

the bottom of the radiator has 2 small plastic shafts that stick of it on both sides with a rubber bushing on it. These shafts slide into holes on the core support. Theres also a rubber mount thing on the core support that helps a bit. Generally the upper support is what offers the most support.

Hey Tom,

What year car is it going into?

I'm doing a '69 Camaro and am working on that right now. I'm going to cut off the tabs on the rad. support side, so all is left is mostly flat pads. drill a mounting hole in each to match holes I place in the support. Use a little rubber shock mount between the two and use bolts and nuts. Then looking at doing a trim piece on top for looks, when I can!

A '66 Wagon is a neat ride, had a chance to get a '65 or '66 (old age sucks!) 2 door wagon for less than a grand, like new in 1980. I didn't have anything close to that so...

As far as the radiator goes, I see it as a proven part, with the 2 fan setup, a low dollar approach to get a running car. Figure I can upgrade later down the road. And I still have lots of little, and a few big, things to still buy before I'm done! Like wheels & tires, driveshaft, steering shaft, gauges, etc...

Exactly what I'm thinking. I am trying my best to keep it all GM if possible, that way replacement parts are easy to find......I'll start a build thread at some point, but have two cars ahead of my own right now....

I need to do a build thread also, got a library of pics on photobucket. I'm just about ready to get into wiring, need to mount the rad and support tomorrow. Also was going to wait on rear susp upgrade (multi-leaf for now) but decided to sell off some ammo to fund the springs and better shocks. Now I need to yank all that out and do more cleaning, at least I haven't put the tank back in yet. Also have a complete deluxe interior waiting to install, excited to get that done too!

Was it easier to find the radiator hoses using a stock f-body radiator? Is it taller/wider than the first gen f-body radiators? Wondering if I would be better off using my current radiator, or use an ls1 f-body radiator

Hi Bill,
I have original oses, just don't know how they will line up but should know by tomorrow. The LS1 radiator is wider than stock, but still very doable. no problem with the height of it. If I get past my own little screw-up on mounting it, I should have it done and will do some pics, if that will help. Good thing using tis radiator is that it is cheap, very light, and made for the system.

Pics would be great, thanks!
Do you still have the battery in the original location in the engine bay? If so, is the radiator going to cause problems with the battery? I like the idea of the fans and radiator from the f-body if I can get it cheap

I'm going to start with the battery in the original location. I will have to trim about an inch off the side of the battery tray, which won't hurt, the tray is for the old 24 series battery. Will eventually move to the trunk, so not a big deal. Will do some pics tomorrow and post them for ya. I'll try to find the seller on ebay where I got my radiator and fans for $145 + s/h, not to shabby. I also got an underhood harness for $35 and am using the fan relays & fuses, and try to adapt a few other relays.

Got sidelined today! For being so far north, we had no winter to speak of, 8" of snow was the most we had on the ground. Of course last night a nice cold front hit, 2" of snow, most already melted, but wasn't able to finish the rad. support so I could mount the radiator.
Getting my propane heater fixed to get some warmth in the shop so I can move forward. If I don't get there tonite, I'll do some pics ASAP tomorrow and post them. From the mock-up, it looks like everything will work just right.
Getting real itchy to get this thing done and on the road, just waiting on a lump of $$$ to get the remainder of stuff to finish her off!!!

That seems to be the reason most of ours are on hold, that dang money issue

No rush, just when you get time. Could you also get a pic of the wire harness for the fans?

thanks again

ps
sorry to get off your topic Tom
