MAF sensor placement

MAF sensor placement Hi guys, probably a dumb question but I have time.... I notice that most MAF sensors are at the end [begining?]of a long air inlet tube. Do they need to be so far away or is it ok to mount it close to the throttle body

Ideally you want the MAF placed in the straightest area of you piping. The straighter the airflow the more consistent and accurate readings it will get.
That being said, I have seen them put basically anywhere and work well enough to run.

ideal case would be about 10 diameters straight inlet, and about 2 diameters at the outlet. basically though, it will act more linear with a longer straight inlet piece. that being said, it'll run ok still, but if you have a choice give it a little straight section inlet to the maf, and it'll be more accurate for the pcm.
