Question Ls1 in a Jeep

Looking to put an LS1 in my 95 Jeep Wrangler (YJ). I am building a competition rock crawler and the LS1 seems to be a good light weight/high power option. I already have 1-ton axles (Dynatrac Pro Rock 60's) and an Atlas II 4.3 transfer case. I am looking to get as much torque from the LS1 as I can. I heard the truck intake will allow you to get around 380 ft lbs.

Probably looking at an LS1/4L60E from an f-body donor.

Anyone have experience with this kind of swap?

Any words of advice?

I already know wiring harness/PCM is a big consideration....

I am trying to get in touch with John as Speartech to discuss wiring harness options.

Any help is appreciated.

Thats a badass crawler! If guys are putting SBC 350ci engines in them, you can definitely fit an LS1 into it. The LS1 is actually shorter than the SBC, because it does not have a distributor on the back. If you want alot of torque, do a simple cam swap into that LS1 and put some long tube headers on it. With a nice 221/221 .558 112 T1 camshaft, it should make alot of torque compared to stock.

This is true but width-wise it is overall wider than a SBC so be advised!

I saw a rock climber Jeep with an LS1 in it last week here in Alpharetta Ga. The guys that did it had some problems but over all they said it was fairly cut and dry. Headers were a problem. Engine mounts were custom. Dont know how they did the drivetrain. The guy that did it was Named Don, and his company is Southern Off-Road Specialists. PM me if you want a number or an address.

I installed one in a 79 CJ5. Mine was a 97 Corvette LS1 so its motor mounted from below. That worked out well cause I used a steel 2x4 with 3/8 inch plate on each end bolted to the frame. Also the Vette oil pan with its wings had about 2.5-3 inches clearance on each side.
On my 3300 mile round trip to Ouray and Telluride I made 24mgp on the road and only lost 1 bolt on a limiting strap. It was nerve racking at times when I would think about all the work I performed on the Jeep,,, especially when I was at the end of Black Bear pass.
I used Speartech for my harness also. On my air intake I went up and then back with a custom made plenum.

Good luck
Larry

LMCJ5, Got any pics of your air intake? I'd like to see that. I'm thinking of something along the lines of "cowl induction" for my car.

you may want to try a 4l80E tranny from a Chevrolet/GMC HD truck, they are suppose to be stronger than the 4l60e

DaleMX, thanks, yea, I know Don. I'm president of a local Jeep Club, Southern Jeeps and we used to have our club meeting at Southern Offroad. Was not aware he had done an LS1 Swap though.

LMCJ5, that sounds like one nice CJ5. I'd also like to see some pics of that intake... I may just go with an SM465 manual tranny since I heard the 4L60E output shaft has to be changed if you use one from a 2wd vehicle. Another option may be to go with a 700R4.

A couple of cool 4WD sites:

bluetorch fabworks (doing some custom 4-link 1/4 eliptic suspension for me):

Yeah I agree that is a very cool project and would be light weight. Next winter I will be dropping in a 4.8L Gen III small block with a 4L60E out of a 1/2 ton pick up. It is about 80 lbs heavier (due to iron block), but much cheaper and easier to find.

The biggest thing about using the 4L60E off-road is keeping it cool, which is an easy thing to do but its often over looked.

Good luck and keep us advised of your project!

Here's what my air intake looks like. I'll find another angle and send it in a minute. I made it out of 16gauge sheet metal, air saw, hammer, torch for brazing and some wrinkle finish paint.
The loose dememtions are, well,,, The formula/ math said that a 4inch diameter hole needs 13.5 cubic inches to turn in this fashion. With that said I cut a 6.2, half circle. The 2 pieces looked like a U. then I cut the 4" hole and made a 2 inch border. I made the flat ends wrap around a 4 inch pile and the 2 inch border filled in the sides.
I got to run to an SCCA event at the moment or my instructions would be better.

What kind of transfer case are you or others using on your LS1 conversions? I would like to be able to adapt my Borg Warner Torque On Demand (TOD) transfer case to my new 4L60E transmission. The TOD unit has a right hand side (passenger) front output. Just curious. THANKS in advance.

Coachreed, I'm using an Atlas II 4.3 transfer case from Advance Adapters.

Sven, looks great... nice install. Is that an LQ4? Strong motor. How is the weight on that one?

Found an LS6, but they want too much for it.... how cool would that be?

The search for a donor goes on...

LQ4 ..... Weight is about 500 plus or minus. Very strong motor, Just put in a Dana 60 rear end and the jeep pulls the front tires off the ground.... Absolutely amazing.....

I am putting a 6.0, 4l60e, Atlas 3.8 D60's front and rear in my 1986 CJ7. I just need to finish some odds and ends. Drive shafts are ordered and I still need to do the exhaust and some wiring.
I would like to see all the pictures that you can send me Sven. If you have a link to your pictures that would be great.

Right now I am working on putting a water temp and oil pressure sending units in. I would like to know how you hooked your sending units up and how you ran your exhaust.

As for 4x4doc I would say take your time and plan on spending a lot more money then you planed on spending. Ask a lot of questions.

Thanks
