Default SBC Crate Motor Smoking *PROBLEM SOLVED* Update Pg.2

Sorry for not being LS motor based but I am at my wits end with this thing and thought you brainiacs could help.

2 Summers ago I bought a crate Goodwrench 350 from Summit. I also ordered a smaller comp cam kit for it as well as intake, carb etc etc everything brand new.

I got the motor to my buddies shop and installed the cam, intake etc etc.

I had bought some Harland roller rockers for it but when we put them on dry, I realized I ordered the wrong ones. We removed them and installed the stockers back on.

We fired it up after properly lubing and checking everything.

We broke it in then tuned it and got it all setup. I changed the oil and took it for a gentle drive varying RPM and speed etc etc

It sat for about a month. I got the car back home to my father and he started driving it.

We noticed it smoking a little out the tailpipes, white smoke. No oil burning, no coolant missing....

I thought maybe it was the Edelbrock carb or Air Gap intake.

Pulled intake and bought brand new Holley Street avenger. Installed new intake gaskets, new carb, new fuel line with better filter etc etc..... set the timing and got everything going correctly.

Still smokes!

It doesn't burn oil or coolant that I can tell and it runs beautifully. As soon as you start it up, it's fine but it seems like as SOON as it warms up a little, smoke out of bother tailpipes.

The motor has 959 miles on it and it's embarrassing the **** out of my father to drive his newly resto-modded '56 Chevy with it smoking like it does.

Could it be the heads? Valves? I've asked tons of people that know their **** about motors and they all don't have a clue what it could be.

If its not coolant or oil, then its fuel. Adjust the carb

It doesn't take much oil to get a little smoke. You could be burning it and not notice a drop in level. Rings and valves are the first place to look. Pull the plugs and check for fouling of any type. Do a compression and leakdown check to look for any anamolies. Just basic auto mechanics. it is not unheard of for a mistuned carb to dump excess fuel into the cylinders causing ring wash.

I have found bad valve seals usually cause smoke at start up. since yours smokes after it gets warm it could be rings.

I had the PCV (which is baffled) running to the front of the carb (Holly Street Avenger) and the trans vacuum line going to the rear of the carb vacuum port.

I plugged the larger carb nipple and left the PCV hose dangling

I ran the motor for about 7-8 minutes and it's still blowing like mad.

Gotta buy a small plug for the little port tomorrow morning and let it idle to see if it's sucking trans fluid but there was no residue on the trans vacuum port hose at the rear of the carb.

Gonna try to borrow a compression tester tomorrow as well.

Pulled the drivers side bank of plugs just now. This doesn't look good.

Drivers side:

It also appears that the driver side is smoking and I can barely notice any smoke on the passenger side, that's why I pulled the drivers side first.

My *guess* is that the rings on your #5 are shot/didn't seat right.

#5 doesn't appear that it has been firing for some time. Could you feel a miss on acceleration?

As mentioned B4: Take a look at the valve stem seals to see if they are off the guides...
Pull the carb, and take look in the ports for leaks at the manifold and cyl head...

You know, it has always rand hard and great but I did notice a miss last time we had the car out cruising. I guess this explains that miss.

Just rented a compression tester, about to warm her up.

not tell the story.
Those cyls have ALOT of oil in them, and may cause a false high read.
A leakdown may do a better job.....

That's what I'm thinking. I just wiped the plugs down and was about to put them back in when I noticed that number 5 plug was so oiled that the oil had cooked on the electrode and it took a file to get all of the tar off of the plug.

So, I guess it's safe to say the rings on number 5 are gone?

Oil on the plugs could come from the places already mentioned.
Intake leak.

Well the compression test isn't possible. With the headers on the car, I can't get the adapter onto the nipple that I threaded into the cylinder head.

I could reach number 3 and it was 120 pounds but can't get to the rest of the cylinders.

I'm just about to give up and yank the motor out at this point.

That sure looks like something is leaking onto the plug. Try Old Geezer's suggestions first.
