lq9 in a 98 3500?? Im thinking of swapping the 454 in my 98 3500 2wd shortbed dually for a lq9. The truck runs and drives and I have a complete lq9 engine. Im going to be driving the truck daily may pull the pontoon boat on the weekends and occasionally may have to pull my 5th wheel trailer if the other truck is down. Theres not much aftermarket for the 454. What kinda power can I make with lq9 motor? is the swap worth it? right now i drive the 2000 daily and it also has the 454. I really dont need that big motor daily. Also Im thinking of changing this dually to a single wheel rearend. Thanks for any help guys.
The 96-98 injection is known for its issues so it's a great engine to replace. Personally I love that body style of truck, but won't own anything with that Vortec crap engine. Luckily that setup lends itself well to an LS-based swap. Assuming the fuel pressure is similar from the 5.7 Vortec to the 7.4 ( I think it is) then you can use you existing pump to fuel the engine. The 5.7 vortec throttle cable works well and the truck manifolds and pan fit that frame. Get some 1" setback swap plates to move the LS engine into stock bellhousing territory and the trans should still line up with everything keeping it simple. Great swap candidate!
