Default 4l60e Help

Hi, I am putting a 5.3 in an 86' regal. I bought a rebuilt 4l60e with a removable bell housing and was told it would work on the 5.3, so I don't know for sure. Than I bought a converter off ebay. Here is the link for it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=330481986788

Now the converter feels like it is bottoming out in the back and is not getting on the splines all the way. Do I have the wrong bell housing or converter?
Any help is appreciated.

Could be a couple of things. Pilot pin of convertor verses crank hole differences and also on some setups you may need a spacer because the crank on the LS motors is 0.400" forward of the old SBC position.

Compare the pilot pin diameter on the torque convertor to the hole in the back of the crank and post it. That should help get you on the right path.

There are 2 different length bolt-on bell hsgs...About 9/16" difference.

Well I actually can't bolt it on at all. The converter bottoms out that the transmission won't bolt on because the converter sticks out.

I forgot to mention that you know that the Torque convertor is properly installed in the trans when there is about 1/4" between the back of the convertor and the pump cover.

are you sure you have the covertor in all the way? Have seen many times where people just didn't have it in and thought they had problems, sometimes pulling it back out a bit then turning it while pushing in until you ccan here that it is turning the pump in the trans

I had the same problem. Here was the discription of the convertor I bought: GM 4L60E 1984-02 30 Spline 2,200 Stall Torque Converter. I guess there was more to it then that because this would not fit my 99 5.3L. I had to us the stock convertor, not sure what the difference was. I had the same problem, the convertor was not going on far enough. First I just thought it was kicking my ****, but then I tried out the stock convertor that came with my 4l60e and it went right on and everything fit perfectly. Was hoping to have a little more stall but o well, someday. I was told I need a "TMBX" or "VJCX" ??? not sure it that was just the numbers that company use or what.

There are two basic 4L60E torque converters. The early model 4L60E transmissions (from 93 to 02) use the same type converter as the 84 1/2 and up 700R4 transmission. The later model converter was used in the 98 and up LS engine style 4L60E and 4L65E transmissions. The early model transmission is easy to identify. They have a small O-ring on the tip as shown in the first pic below. The second pic shows the LS style 4L60E input shaft. The VJCX is a reduced impellor converter that debuted in the Trailblazer. It'll only fit the LS style 4L60E transmissions. It's a good improvement over the factory 300mm converter and will stall around 2500 rpm behind a mild LS1.

Ok, so the transmission shop I bought it from knows absolutely nothing. I checked and the converter is on all the way. It also appears that I have an earlier model, according to kevins info. What do I need to do get this to work? It does appear I need about 1/2", .4 like docked wage said.
