Question Windstar van fan problems (Maybe)

I put the 99 Windstar van fans on the GTO and they work great but when they kick on it goes from 14.2 volts to about 12 and if the car is idling sometimes it will die. If you idle it up a little during start up of the fans you are fine because right after they start everything goes back to normal.

I've read that these fans pull a bunch of amps at start but this is a little ridiculous.

do these fans need a capacitor or anything random like that?

any ideas??

Are you using relays to turn them on?

Also what size is your alternator, it could be taking a **** on you. You could also check the wiring and make sure you have the correct size wires going to them.

yes I'm using relays.. one on each fan and they are activated by the computer. I do have both of them coming on at the same time BUT we did test by disconnecting one fan and then the other and it acts the same even when only one fan comes on.

haven't checked the alt yet. I don't remember what size the wire is but its about twice the size of the wire that the fans have on the factory plugs harness

Can you just set the enable parameters differently? Are you running 3 relays to run them on low or do they only run on high?

they only run on high. 1 relay per fan in the power wire that goes straight to the battery

are they single speeds or dual speed fans?

ever put a amp meter on it when it starts to see what they really pull on start up? I would be curious. do you happen to have the thickness of the fan motors from the rad flange? i might also be interested in running these too.

Thanks

Do you have a wire running from the alternator straight to the battery?

Sounds like your voltage sensing is off, probbaly dealing with your engine fuse block or power distribution block.

What are you using as a engine fuse block?

Read over that link. Those fans draw a ton on startup, maybe 20 amps each? They work well though. I think maybe just control them independantly. I have a Nelson 3 relay harness on my 03 Silverado SS.

I have the 2000 windstar and when they are off I have 13.9-14.0volts, when they kick on 13.2-13-5 then it goes back to 13.9-14volts.... So thats why I said earlier its probbaly a wiring issue.

Also are you running at least 30 amp relays?

Also where are you running your accessories for the car? Where is your power source coming from. I bet yall are not using a horn relay or power distribution block..

the fans are grounded and powered directly to the battery with the relays in the hot wire.

I want to say the computer power wire is coming from the fuse box but i'd have to double check.. I don't really remember

every thing else is factory 69 gto

If them fans are anything like the Taurus they will pull alot of amps.. like 40amp each ?..

Might consider comparing what the Windstar setup is using, that being the Relays, Wire Gauge, power source and make sure your setup is equal to the power capacity and comsumpion of volts and amps. Also how and when they get activated.

Hope you figure it out.. might also consider a bigger capacity battery.
