I 3rd that. Listen to Rodder I did. Mine works great, the speed reading is dead on based on my rpm, tire size, and gear ratio following Rodders wiring & autometers calibration instructions.

If I buy an electronic programmable speedo do I need to buy a VSS like one of these http://www.autometer.com/cat_accesso...st.aspx?pid=28 to make it work?

Anyone know what the pule/mile and signal type (sqr or sine) is on a 3rd gen fbody (electronic speedo).

autometer has the same typ of gauges for 87-92 fbodies as well as 93-02.
u guys have confirmed that the vss output from a lsx pcm can drive the autometer gauge. so logically the signal should also drive a stock 87-92 electronic speedo.

but that is just a theory.

any advice /comments appriciated

not if you're running the factory pcm and trans (4L60e/80e).

edit: that hall effect sensor in the link basically hooks into where the speedo would have on the rear of the older transmissions used with mechanical speedos. it converts the 'mechanical' output into an electronic signal for the autometer to use. it would be required if you ran an older trans, but not with an electronic one.

here's a good thread on hooking up aftermarket gauges to the factory pcm. it deals specifically with f-body harnesses, but i found my 2000 truck harness to be the same for the speedo.

The 3rd gen electric speedo is looking for a 4000 PPM square wave.

Thanks for the informative reply. I came across a couple of potentially good deals on gauges w/o senders. The deals became less attractive if I had to turn around and by a VSS. Not huge money, but enough to make buying new gauges appealling over a used set.

I'm going to resurrect this thread instead of starting another...

I'm having a helluva time with my Autometer electric speedo and 4L80e. I connected the speedo to the square wave output (pin D connector c100), but it barely registered, although the trans shifted fine. I then connected it directly to the VSS hi signal at the trans connector, but the trans wouldn't shift, and i pegged the speedo doing about 20 mph. I've got a speedo like in these instructions, and NO, I'm NOT running the OUT wire back to the PCM.

EDIT: wow, I just realized that I posted here before... connector c100/pin D goes to PCM red connector pin 50 like in the link I mentioned above.

The ones from Autometer can be calibrated to nearly any pulse rate. You just push the Calibrate button on the speedo, drive 2.0 miles, then push the button again. Wham-o, it's calibrated to your sender's pulse rate.

Mine is connected to the LS1 PCM's 4K square wave signal and works great. 4 wires...12VDC, 2 grounds, and the green/white wire from C220 pin K (goes on the Autometer's "SQ" pin).

Hi
OK, I have a 1993 lt1 4l60 trans, and trying to wire the speedometer. The speedometer has these wires.
Red + 12 v
Black Ground
Green (4) LED
Yellow (8)open collect output
Brown (3) open collect output
Dark Gray (2) open collect out put
White (6) remote reset input
Blue (7) signal input

The ECM pin D8 , VSS output, (4000k pulse per mile. to instrument cluster.
Do i wire the Blue wire signal input to pin D8 VSS output
or if there is another way.
Thanks Tim
