Default 1x or 4x cam gear???

I was told by a lcoal mechanic that I could pull the cam sensor on my l92 to see which cam gear I had. I googled up some photos so I would have something to compare to. But when I look inside, I think I was looking at the reluctor wheel. Is there a way to tell which cam gear I have without opening up the front of the motor? There saying that I need the 4x cam gear in order for my schwanke computer/harness and lingenfelter box to work.

It kinda makes sense because with the cam sensor plugged up, the motor backfires during start. But if I unplug the cam sensor, it tries to crank. Yesterday it ran for about 4 seconds.

If it is an L92 with VVT, then you have a cam phaser:


One problem you may have is that the VVT will not work with the older LS1 box.

1x cam gear is for the 24x reluctor wheel (sp?)...4x is for the 56x.
I'm running a 4x on my '09 LY6 along with a MSD 6LS-2 firing the coil packs.
If the system you are looking at is for 24x... you'll need a 1x cam gear.

I would imagine that you need to change the cam, gear, and timing cover in order to use the 24x electronics.

That converter box is helpful on a normal engine without the VVT system, but since the 24x computers were never designed to operate the VVT, you will have to physically eliminate it in order to make it all work right.

So is this what I saw when I looked through the cam sensor hole?
And to be clear, if I plan to use the lingenfelter box, I need to change this for a 4X gear, or lose the Lingenfelter box and change the cam phasor for 1x gear and 56X for 24X reluctor?

Default 4x cam gear vs VVT

Yes, the 4x camshaft timing gear replaces the VVT camshaft phaser assembly (which is the camshaft timing gear on an L92 or L99 engine).

You can keep the same camshaft position sensor but you also need to change to the LS2/LS3 timing cover (GM PN 12600326) or the sensor to reluctor wheel gap will be wrong.
