LS Motor radiator question

Default LS Motor radiator question

Is the water inlet on an LS motor on the bottom hose as that is where the thermostat is located? Is this where the cooler water enters the motor and the hot exits the water pump to the top of the radiator?? Thanks Not sure if I have the direction of the water flow correct. Thanks

be sure to fill the motor with coolant from the top side before starting it up for the 1st time.

By filling from the top I think he means the top radiator hose. The theromostat is in the bottom radiator hose and it doesn't like to pass water when cold.

I just filled mine again today. I jack up the front end of the car to get the radiator to the high point then unbolt one of the steam vents to give engine air a place to get out. Fills pretty quick that way.

Pulling a steam vent plug helps it drain too.

^^^ correct....fill the block thru the upper radiator hose. If you hook up the hoses and fill up the radiator...then start it up like a sbc...the thermostat wont open, coolant will stay in the radiator, and the block will stay dry......... as it builds up heat.

Kept watching gauges on mine on 1st startup and new something was up. Shut it down and discovered the problem. Had I just let it go I'm guessing I'd have cracked the block and/or heads.

I drilled a 3/16" hole in my t'stat. Never had one single problem with filling, burbing, or cooling. Runs 175° all day with A/C in SETX heat and humidity...

Why not go old school and remove the thermo completely. besides U only need it during the winters.

Without a restrictor of some type in the system, which a T-Stat will do. Water will be flowing too quickly and never really give the coolant time to absorb and transfer heat out of the engine and to to be cooled by the Radiator.. It well work in some case, but for a street driven car/truck.. might not be the best solution to remove it completely.

This is also why an Electric pump will flow at a slower, but even flow rate.
