Default Block protrusion question - picture attached

I'm planning on installing a GM Gen III / IV engine in my altered dragster but there are protrusions on the side of the block that I would have to cut off in order to fit the engine between the chassis rails.
What is the purpose of these protrusions?
Can I cut them off?
Thanks.

Chop away! I cut one of these off in one of my swaps.

There is some theoretical loss in structural integrity when you tinker with anything, but practically they are used in some way during the manufacturing process.

Since this is the internet I am sure some one will post that removing the bosses will result in instant catastrophic failure.

I've removed those before as well, no issues.*

*Note: I am not responsible if you cut that off and it makes your dragster explode and kill a bus full of nuns or babies.

Most likely used for the manual or Automated robots during the assembly of the engine.. if cut clean and leaving no sharp edges.. I would say no issue wtih removing them...

I think they may be feed gates for when they are casting or perhaps locators used while machining the block. I don't see any structural purpose for them. In my educated opinion, cut away.

Looks like they are being used as holding points on the assembly line:

Agreed, Nice Article. Also agree that you should cut them smooth dont leave sharp edges.
