the e36 didn't come here AWD but will say that they work great in the snow w/ snow tires... it's currently what I run in the winter until I can get to the LSx swap. Another member ran a LSx swapped e36 in the snow just fine too.
One swap I've been thinking about, because I'm fan of AWD as well, is 3.6 SRX AWD setup into a e36 or e30 and turbocharge it.
Looking at the way AWD bmw's are set up though it looks like the front drive shaft goes through the oil pan. Seems to me the easiest way (relitivly speaking) is to only use the LS engine and adapter plate to the BMW transmission and custom make the LS oil pan to fit the front BMW diff and axles.
