Been hangin round for a while and wanted to share my build. I have a 79 caprice im swapping in a LQ4/700R4 to replace the old 305 and metric 3spd. Planning on a carb'd setup and a msd controller. Been collecting parts so its time to get at it.

thanks fellows, these cars are definitely over looked for anything other than a lowrider. well the first big thing was to pull the motor that had seen better days.

next came the rearend i pulled it and the control arms out to clean them up and install new poly bushings. after cleaning them i used some POR15 and i learned only time takes that stuff off.

Never understood going with a carb'd LSx. Still, love the project. I have a 78 2-door, if I were to do it over I'd go the LSx route too. Will be running a magnasun blown 355 with a T56 when it's all said and done. Have all the parts for it, just waiting to move so I have a garage to work in again. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. Hope everything goes well for you!

I don't know if it was just my finicky carburetor or what but I actually found cold starts a lot easier than hot starts. That is if it were started regularly and had some gas in the bowls. Once it was heat soaked it took a lot of cranking.

I guess it doesn't say what his intended purpose for the car is but unless he plans on drag racing it all the time I think EFI is definitely the way to go. You left yours EFI right?

Love it!
Had a 77 Impala with the green house rear window for my first car, still miss that tank. I pulled the 305 and put in a HO (at the time) 350, it was a joy to drive.
I wish my wife would allow an older tank like that, but with kiddies her requirements are 2005 or newer with side curtain airbags-this rationale wins every time!
Keep us posted on your progress, and I'm going to have to side with the EFI argument, unless she's just a drag racer!

I'm waiting to hear back from the guys at bigfastcar.com to see if their kit works on the older b-bodys. I had a 95 caprice with one of their kits in it before and it worked well. I'll let you know what they say. They're about the only parts I'm missing for the build at this point, even have a nice D&D built T56 sitting in storage.

the car never had a rear sway bar so the donor car gave up that and i bought a set of 2/3 lowering springs from street trends. the mounting plate for the sway bar was junk so i fabbed a pair of new ones out of some 1/4 cold rolled heres a pic of the old one (the good one)

If you decide you ever want to ditch the metal tank the plastic ones from the 90's b-bodys drop right in. I'm actually running one from a 95 Impala SS. You just have to be sure to grab the tank straps that go with them and they'll use the same mounting points as the originals.

i made it pretty simple when i adapted the -6 to the stock gas tank. all i did was buy a 37 degree flaring and cut the pickup around where the screwdriver points. i used a -6 tube nut and sleeve and a coupler.

this was the car before starting my swap. i had rebuilt a small block (nothing special), stripped and painted the front frame horns and put new poly bushings and ball joints in the font end.
