Default L59 (5.3 flex fuel) question

Is there any reason to steer clear of an L59 flex fuel version of the 5.3? Better off to stick with a 5.3 LM7?

Larger injectors than the LM7 and you get the ability to run e85. Make sure you get the flexfuel sensor if you plan on having e85 capability though, as those sensors are expensive. Theres not really a lot of benefit to getting a l59. Well except for pulling up to a e85 pump and putting it into a car that was definently not e85 capable from the factory and having everyone freak. There are also not any drawbacks that I can think of. Running a tank of e85 every once in a while is a good way to clean the fuel system and injectors though, just watch out cause it tends to plug up a fuel filter a lot faster than a car that just runs plain gas.

The early L59's had a fuel comp sensor (FCS) in the fuel line, the later ones didn't not have the sensor. The later non FCS PCM's used the O2 sensor to determine a change of fuel based on fuel level and O2 reads then it would know what fuel was in the tank.
IIR its the 2005+ motors that don't have the FCS, the PCM has to have a working fuel level sensor, and the capacity of the fuel tank programmed into the PCM to run e85 with out the FCS.

Speaking of flex-fuel, can these things differentiate octane levels on straight gasoline or just between gasoline and ethanol?

not really. at least on my 2001 0411 pcm'd motor, I'm not sure about the later ones. on mine the composition sensor measures only two things, fuel temp and ethanol percentage.

there's a bunch of threads on flex fuel here and on hptuners if you wanna dig.

No biggie for now, we're firmly entrenched in oil country. Not an E-xx station within 100 miles...

You can get E85 at the new station at the south end of Bridge City.
