my car has always had this "problem", even when it just had a 350 tbi in it.

basically the steering his always been responsive but too sensitive (in the sense that my steering wheel feels as if its not attached to anything)

i added new ps fluid when i installed my engine and im planning on sucking out all of it and adding some fresh fluid in(just incase i let water get into my gearbox while the car was outdoors/ripped apart)

while changing out my ps fluid, is there anything i can add to thicken(or lighten?) the fluid to get my steering feeling a little bit "normal" - any simple fix, if not i can live with it

LQ4 with a stock ps pulley + stock steering box (good condition)

My car was the same way. I got a turn one power steering restrictor and it's nice and stiff now.

where does that go/how does it install? im guessing it just makes a tube smaller?

It replaces the factory fitting that is in the pump on the high pressure side. It goes directly to a -6 fitting so the power steering line I was already using hooked right up. It has a very small orifice in it to reduce the pump pressure. The steering feels very good now.

The newer power steering pump is usually a few hundred PSI higer than the older pump and what the PS Box requires. There has been a few thread or post about change out the valve to lower or raise the working pressure. It comes down to that you can changing the spring or shim the valve to change the pressure.

To answer your first question, thicker fluid shouldn't make any noticeable difference. You need to drop the high side pressure so you have less assistance from the ps pump. The guys above sound like they have a good solution.

thanks everything, im gonna take a shot at decreasing the pressure from the high side.
