Got my 99'LS1/t-56 ,30,000 mile complete setup from Merv @ Emerald Coast Engineering back in 02' at Daytona Turkey Rod Run car show. Was Delivered to my house for $4'400. Merv travels the country to shows, & sold Lokar their first LT1 to prototype parts on.
A common truck engine, I,d check locally first. Less common enginrs, I,d probably look to someone with a good rep , such as Merv or now Shawn, which can also supply advice & maybe discounts on needed new items.

Just had a 2004 5.3L LM4 Aluminum delivered to my door for $1250. I used Apex Auto Parts (Brandi & Kevin) out of Oklahoma City. The engine was pulled out of a fresh crashed 04 Buick Rainier and shipped to me by Green Leaf Auto Recyclers out of Fort Worth Texas. Shipped residential lift gate with R&L Carriers.
Ok, it didnt go smoothly! I wanted an aluminum block LM4. (harder to find than I thought) Ended up using one of those internet broker search deals. Got 12 responses in 30 minutes...none of which were for LM4's. Every one was a cast iron LM7. Then Kevin from Apex calls and he's got exactly what I want...(I was very specific about a "complete" pull out, ecm, wire harness, o2 sensors, maf, all accessories drives. So I give ole Kev my payment of $1050 and he was to call back with a tracking number in the afternoon. I get a call that afternoon and it's not ole Kev, but Brandi. Kevin is no longer employed at Apex and she is stepping in to get me taken care of. I guess when ole Kev left, my engine deal went with him. Anyway, Brandi steps in and the next day she has this motor in Texas, but it's $200 more than I already paid. I pay it, she sends me the VIN# and shipping info and ...BAM! it's in my garage 4 days later. In Wisconsin!!
As the wrap comes off, I start noticing that it is indeed an Aluminum LM4, but far from a "complete" pull out. No throttle body, accessories or brackets, power steering pump, a/c...gone. So I called and was basically told too bad. Recyclers pull those off and sell parts individually. I might chalk it up to lesson learned, IF I hadn't specified I wanted all that stuff. They assume the new motor is going in the same make and model and you can switch parts from the old. No biggie, but will add a couple hundred to the project.
This is my first build and i am sure there will be a few more "bumps" in the road, but it's not life and death, and I cant think of any hobbies that don't end up being more expensive than one figures.
Just took the tore down block, heads, crank, and rods to the machine shop this morning. For only having 95K on this motor, it was ready for a rebuild. Doesn't look like "regular maintenance" was in the previous owners vocabulary, but the shop guy said he's seen worse and he'd clean it up and spec it out and see where we are. His phone call will determine how wild or mild this build gets.

I got my 2009 5.3 20K miles complete off local craigslist for $600. I used the a/c compressor on my truck which would have costed my $300 either way. I found a 5500 miles LQ4 shortblock on craigslist for $500. I took the 799 heads, accessories, and other parts needed off the 5.3 and put on the 6.0. I parted the intake, throttle body, injectors, harness, ecm, tcm for $600.00. So if you take the $600 (5.3) minus $300 (compressor) plus $500 (6.0) minus $600 (partout)...I've only got around $200-$300 in my 799 headed low mile 6.0 longblock. If your patient, there are some deals on craigslist.

Bought my LQ4 with Magnacharger from LKQ, $1100.00 shipped. I did need to buy the DBW setup, mass air and ac compressor seperatley. Still all in all a good deal. 4L60E with converter $650.00 delivered.

it is there business if they want to charge a core charge or not. if you dont like the core charge find one at another yard. the lsx swaps have gotten so popular and price of wrecked salvage cars are at a record high prices. the dismanters are forced to charge higher prices or go out of business.
yes they are getting high around here for junk

Had a buddy at the GM dealer call me. Says a lady in the parts dept. has a 2000 Silverado her boy wrecked. Only liability insurance. Just had 4l60 rebuilt and this truck was maintained its whole life at the dealer. She let him drive it once. Hydroplaned and flipped it. Says she wants 1000$ for the whole truck. Still drives. Paid 600$. Had 241K miles on it. Pulled everything out and stuck it in an S10. Has 50psi at idle warm. Been driving this truck everyday and I don't know if I'll ever be so lucky again to get one that runs this good. I stripped that truck and used every available piece on the s10 so I wouldn't have to buy parts. Very cheap conversion.

I got mine from schram auto. $3300 shipped to Canada. Was a 2007 5.3/4L60 out of a Tahoe. Everything was there, harness, both ECM and TCM, DBW pedal, all the accessories and a/c compressor. It had under 50miles (brand new) on it. Doing another swap in a 61 Bel Air and need to find a 6.0/6L90 for a good deal now..

I got my LS2/4L70 from them. I have nothing but good to say about them, crated with care and shipped quickly, any missing parts were replaced with new in the GM parts bag and shipped right to my door. Engine and trans are flawless!
I would use them again.
