Nice build! I am starting my 89 hatch swap in a week. One question, was the steering shaft a necessary item due to the manifolds?

No - not really. Our manifolds exit parallel to the cylinder heads; so, they are high enough out of the way (since this is a turbo car). If you've running LT's on a NA/blower car I would think you would be more likely to need one. I HATE the rubber rag joint in the stock mustang steering shafts though! I have had them go bad in all three Mustangs I've had (87, 93, and 04)... Since you have to pull the shaft irregardless of whether you are fixing a worn rag joint or installing a new shaft, I figure might as well upgrade to a solid-type shaft. Coming from somebody who also likes to road race, the steering feel is a key component to driver confidence and effective handling.

---

Got some more work done today - mainly finishing the wheel studs, fitting and installing the front brakes, properly fitting/spacing the steering rack, and about halfway done with the fuel cell/battery subframe.

Brakes and front end all the way done, just need to make some new brake hoses later on.

Had to open up the back of the 1/2" stud holes on my brake spacers to 5/8" to accommodate the taper of the studs. Didn't have a chamfer bit big enough so I just set my drill press to 3/8" depth, worked like a charm.

About halfway done...gotta cut a notch and then re-box the rearward most bar to drop the sump down where it needs to go, and either gusset or brace the corners. Being that the fuel cell is "inside" the trunk, and it will be above the tin work, a fuel cell cage/fuel safe won't be needed. I will have to fab a little "guard" for the sump itself out of sheet metal, though.

Oh and this showed up,

Powerbond SFI Race model damper

I think road racing will be for my next swap. The mustang will be more drag race and street. Your swap is inspiring though! So you plan to road race this car as well?

lol no... this is a drag specific build. They shut down the class I had planned to run here locally so my dad and I are most likely going to run the NMCA index series and LSx shootout - along with local index and maybe some brackets for the old man I just wish there was a good heads up class close to home (I live 3.5 miles from IRP, or lucas oil raceway whatever they wanna try to make us call it LOL).

Whoa, I haven't updated in forever! Been super busy since I've gone back to school to prepare for MCAT/medical school - needless to say not much progress has been made since my last post. I really need to get the car on the trailer and down to my fabricator to get the turbo kit DONE, meanwhile assemble the motor and start finishing all off the BIG things that still need worked out. It's been nearly two years since starting this project, and I'm really getting tired of it staring me in the face - so it will be getting done, even if that means I have to get outside help on some things.

^^^This I WILL post soon! I just got around to 100% putting the steering stuff back together over this past weekend (mainly so I could roll the car around more easily lol). I'll snap some pictures tomorrow or Saturday and post them up

Here is a picture of steering shaft quick release at least:

FINALLY getting the car in for some fab! Fathouse Fabrications out of Whiteland, IN will starting on our turbo kit, doing final engine assembly, as well as doing our cage - dropping the car off on Tuesday.

I'll be working more on Sunday and will take some pictures before loading the car on the trailer. Of course, as more things come together I'll be sure to post progress shots.

Haha yeah - I think almost did too :p

Here are some pics of how it sits now, before going to Fathouse Fabrications later this evening:

Strange quick release adapter + sparco wheel.

Quick release hub/steering shaft uncovered.

Steering shaft, obviously with quick release splines welded on.

Everything out needed to make room for the cage and those SFC's in the passenger seat, heh.

Sorta what it looks like heh.

Turbo goes here.

More updates to come in the days/weeks ahead

Nothing new to note at the moment! Gonna e-mail my fabricator for some updates here shortly. Luckily I'm only half an hour away from the shop so I can stop by whenever to check up on progress, when there is some that is
