Default 2002 Firebird V6 to V8 K-Member Questions

#1 - I hear that the K-Members are the same with the exception of the mounting holes for the motor mounts. - Can this be modified safely? Or are there any brackets you could use to relocate the motor mounts to safely mount an LS1?

#2 - If it's entirely impossible to safely modify the V6 K-member to use an LS1, then can I use a Tubular K-Member and use my lower / upper A-Arms, brake lines? Also I kind of like the turning radius of my V6, would I have to change the steering rack even with a Tubular K-Member?

V6 and V8 turning radius are the same..

The difference is the mounting holes pretty much..I think the shape in certian spots might be different tho.

My 02 V6 Firebird turns alot sharper than my 02 Z28 did. Z28 turned like a truck, My Firebird can perform U-Turns on a 2 lane road. My Z28 could barely do that on a Avenue.

Anyway though... would it be worth trying to have motor mounts custom fabbed for my V6 KMember? If not, can I re-use the A-Arms / and other components from my stock K-Member on a LS1 Tubular K-Member?

Great question I am in the same exact situation as we speak. Has anyone gotten back to you? The ls1 is actually lighter than the 3.4 v6 that came in my 95 camaro. I am simply gonna end up buying a cowl hood and just either buying motor mount plates or welding my own up. The rack and pinion angle may be different but I am sure it can be modified.

Check out the pic Merv posted in this thread. Notice where the shaft mounts is angled further toward the outside of the frame on the LS1 version....and no rag joint.

You'll want to use the LS1 version for a swap.
And as far as the mounts go, its almost easier to find a LS1 K for sale on CL or here in the classifieds than it is trying to modify the v6 version. And probably cheaper too. Someone always has a stocker to get rid of when going tubular. I got mine with rack and entire front susp still mounted for free! Just be patient & keep looking.
