Default NJ inspection help

Hey all,

My car should be done shortly and ready for the road (finally). I'd like to thank this site and the search button for being an invaluable tool along the process.

My biggest concern right now is getting the car through NJ vehicle inspection and passing the smog test. I'm running Pypes 2.5" dual exhaust kit with X pipe and think I need to add cats. I heard through the grape vine of my friends that an s-10 with a similar swap needed 4 cats to pass the smog test, so now I'm worried.

Who has swaps in NJ and passed inspection? What cats are you using? Right now I'm thinking about Walker 15028 and Magnaflow 95956.

Who has experience with spun cats like the magnaflow? Are they better/worse than the Walker style?

Any more advice/info would be great,
TIA,

Mike

Whoops, sorry I forgot I don't have a sig on this website. It is a 1987 Monte Carlo SS that got a stock 2004 5.3 with a 4L80E behind it.

I dont believe you are going to need the secondary O2s in the car. Someone else can chime in, but you should only need the emissions equipment that came on the car from the factory, EVAP Canister, Catalytic Converters, PCV. The last time I went through with our parts chaser (90 C1500) I dont think they even popped the hood.

I dont think an 6.0 with out the rear o2s will have any issue passing the 1987 Emissions standards that car must meet.

In all honesty I thought that a new(er) engine like mine would have no problem passing 87 smog standards with NO cats but this S-10 story has me a little scared. I am not worried about rear O2s or even EVAP really I mostly worried about what cats flow best and what size I might need, I'd like to use little ones (ones mentioned above are 11.5" long) but if others have experience needing bigger ones I'll have to look into large units.

Thanks

What is NJ testing and conversion rules for engine swap/conversions ?

Most states are based on the California C.A.R.B rules. Which would state all equipement from the donor car needs to be in place and install as it would be from the Donor (2nd O2 included). Not all states would do a complete visual and sniffer/dyno test. Basically your 87 Monty would now be passed as the Donor car/truck requirements and standards (5.3L from the truck).

But if your state only does some inspection and would test for the original car year standard. (87 Monty). you should be ok with only installing what your year / body requires.

Your engine would PROBABLY pass without the cats, but I remember that they do a VISUAL Inspection for the cats to make sure they are present. Whether they are doing anything from an emissions standpoint (hollowed out, etc) is another story. Agree with BCZEE that the state laws have to be checked.

You could register it as antique and not have to worry about any inspection : )

Just found this FWIW. It appears you will still have to pass the emissions test for the 87 year. CATs must be present for a visual, but other than that it just has to pass the requirements of the tail pipe test. Hope this helps.

You are going to need cats. I passed with my 93 Mustang ls1 swap and was in and out pretty quick. No check engine light and they did do the visual inspection to see if there were any cats on the vehicle.

OK thanks for the info guys. I know there needs to be a visual check based on people I have talked to and now that it just has to pass the 87 sniffer standards but I am concerned with how much CAT I actually need.

Are the spun cats any more/less efficient than the other style?

Thanks,

Mike

Not sure if NJ has adopted Calif C.A.R.B rule on cat.. but their are 50 state and 49 state approved Cat's.. Calif has had a rule inplace for the pas 4 or so years. .that the C.A.R.B number has to be stamped into the cat or its shield and must face downwards so that they can be read by the inspector. This only applies to 50 State Cat rules.

You might call one of the shops who installed them and question them or even a smog station on what is allowable. If you like the answer of that tech, use him. Some time you get different answer at different stations/techs.. If the Cat is considered a direct replacement by the manufactor, it should pass...

good luck.
