Default Need help on decision making??

O.k until today i was going to run a 99-2001 5.3 vortec I have all the harness(un-modified still) computer, etc. the only other issue with this motor i have is i dont know anything about it(miles, if it was a driver, how well it ran, etc) and it was given to me with all the bolts of it in a box with it all stripped down to the heads(have nt had the heads off yet),missing sensors, etc.
Anyways today i stumbled across a good friend with a 2005 5.3 vortec with 130,000 kms. was a strong runner before yanked, complete with harness, computer, accy's,etc.i dont think he has the pedal assy. he is asking $1000.
Do I switch motors??
The questions i have about it is the 05 is DBW and the 01 is not,i have already got a new DBC throttle pedal and installed it, how easy is it to change from DBW to DBC is it just the throttle bodies and reluctor sensor or do i have to change the cam gear as well? And can I program the 05 computer for DBC?

Please give me some feed back on which one you think is better/easier,i would like to go wiht the 05 for a number of reasons, but if its a lot more to it then just changing throttle bodies and a sensor and a simple re-program i probably wont.
Thank you for taking the time to read this long winded story

First 1k is not that great of a price.
Second shouldn't be real hard to switch to DBC, whoever reflashes your computer should be able to do it for $100 or less from what I saw on ebay when researching mine (I decided to keep DBW personally, but my motor came with the pedal)
Third, IMHO id not use the motor you have, the sensors will add up, you will need to at least tear it down and verify that the internals look good since you don't have any idea on how it was used or how it ran. And likely if it was at that state of disasembly someone was planning to rebuild it.

I picked up a 150k mile l33 from ebay for$975 (plus shipping) came with computer all sensors wires DBW cable manifold... everything. But a non aluminum 5.3 can be a LOT cheaper, but I am building a lightweight car and wanted the savings in weight from aluminum.

Hmm I dont know how many miles 130,000 kms, so my responce may have been way off, 1k is a good price for a low mile set up, and Id probably have to go for it.

$1K may be steep in the states, but a decent deal up here. You should probably go with the known and more complete 05 5.3 set up,put the rest on a skid and ship it to me...

$1K CDN is still a bit steep, but I suppose that depends on the abundance of truck salvage yards local to you. In SoCal, you'd find very low mileage motors for that price, and perhaps even for less. To answer your question, I'd always opt for a complete package that doesn't require buying all the missing bits and pieces, which can add up to a lot of time chasing parts, and money, IMO. 130,000kms = ~80,000 miles.

Use the 1k CDN to rebuild the motor you already have. You'll have money left over and a new motor.

ok,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-Silvera...ht_5282wt_1163

and then rebuild it. Though getting it to canada may be a problem. Still, id say that you should be able to find a similar deal in canada.

By the time that gets to Calgary(the world's hottest economy, where starting wage at 7-11 is about $18/hr),or out here on the west coast,it will be real close to $1000 still, and machine work+parts-don't get me started on how expensive that is up here...You guys in the midwest and south have no idea how badly we get boned on this side of the border for used LS stuff and shipping, there are deals every now and again out here, but they go very fast,if you get to see them at all.

I hate paying shipping, I go and pick LOTS of stuff up. from hundreds of miles away, id rather pay a bit more in gas (it would usually be cheaper to ship) and make a mini vacation out of it.

Maybe find a budy in the states to warehouse some stuff for you. and then go pick it up all at once, maybe get some extra stuff to sell once you get home to pay for the gas

You better believe it ,you hit the nail on the head! it is f'ing crazy how much this stuff goes for! Your totally right about that EBAY deal, thats pretty much what i have already, btu mines newer, and i am leaning towards the 05 because its newer, and already done, rebuilt, bolt it in and go! Just waiting to hear if he's got the Tac module and pedal assy. if he does, done deal, then i will proceed to get rid of the one i got(or maybe keep it for my next project HMMMM!)

On a side note, maybe I should go find some employment in calgary.

I think you may be missing the flip-side of our Midwest cheap arsed LS parts.

unemployment 8-15% Low wages, disappearing benefits and pensions devastated housing prices.

IF what amounts to a minimum wage job here really nets you 18 an hour that's more then double our wages, seems like you might still be getting your parts at a discount

sounds like i just need to load up a truck full of parts from the pick N pull and drive up there and have a yard sale lol

I wonder if they would let you get away with that?

I always wanted to load up on old motors in Michigan and drive them down south to sell them and buy a couple of muscle car bodies to bring back and repeat the cycle twice a year just to pay for my vacations.
