Default ls6 in my 1963 BelAir

I going take the ls6 out of the 97 GMC for a future lsx build. Decided to transplant it in the BelAir!!!

Want to do it as cheap as possible. What I need help with is the powerglide.

Do you guys know if I can use the 230 straight 6 powerglide with the ls6?

Bellhousing for the powerglide bolt pattern should be the same a TH350/TH400. You will probably have to change flywheel and use a hub spacer.

Would I use a ls flexplate or sbc flexplate?

You will be much happier in the end if you will go ahead and do an overdrive trans while you are doing it.

Superboost I know just trying to put it together on the cheap. Will change it later or use the ls6 for something else.

Why would you want to? Spend a few extra dollars and use a 4 speed auto trans. There's plent of 4l60-e's kicking around. Building it cheap means doing most of the labour work and saving money there.

A few extra dollars would turn into thousands. Transmission, new harness, new tune, new drive shaft, cross member....

Just put in a small block or leave it as it is if your already worried about money. Buy a 1/24 model kit then. Playing with cars is never cheap. Do you have access to a welder? You would need new engine mounts to put in the ls engine, a crossmember can be bouth for $100.00 or make your own. You gonig to need to make a new engine harness either way for the new engine. You can pick up a 4l60 trans for a couple hundred, where's the trans from the truck? I driveshaft will need to be redone, get one made with a slip joint on the front part, even if you kept the glide you should have one and put in a billet hanger unit.

I looked into this before I did my ls1 swap into a 65 impala.

buy a whole powerplant for less than $3500. it will come with engine, trans, harness and computer.

otherwise you will be nickel and dimed to double that when you need to get stuff to fit.

sell your good engine and put it towards the new setup.

they got rid of two speeds for a reason....fuel economy. you will be over reving all the time.

Also forgot to add in that your going to need a tune either way on the trans. Just to get rid of the vatts. Make sure you send it to somebody reliable.I'd go with the person in post #2.

He's completely right on that, I currently have gotten 2 whole power plants (whole cars: 87 merkur with 2001 camaro eng, 2005 gto) with everything for 7 grand. I'll be coming back with a cheap swap once i get time to start after i sell what i don't need off.
