So I MUST run VSS with my 2004 5.3 engine and 4L60e transmission?

Is that the conclusion?

What happens if I do not connect VSS???

You have to run a vss. There is no getting around it. The E in 4l60e stands for electronic. Without a VSS the tranny won't shift. Get the cable-x and mount it under the hood. It won't make any noise mounted there that you can hear. It connects to the speedometer output from the pcm. It doesn't connect straight to the vss. Set the switches up in the box for a 4000 pulse signal(don't ask how, read the instructions) and it will work.
