LOL. Chrysler is always bragging about the modern "hemi" and how potent it is.
In the sand the Hemi trucks are also dogs compared to LS power. Just spend some time at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Mears Michigan and it becomes quickly apparent. Something about those Mopar guys that drives me crazy anyway....
I say go for it.
I get quite a bit of flack from the diehard Ford guys for putting an LS in my '63 Econoline. But I don't let it get to me. I'd rather they realize that a DIEHARD GM guy bought a Ford Econoline because I like they way they look better than the old Chevy vans.

As for comparison. A guy came on my site and posted a thread swapping a modern hemi in his Dakota R/T.
He spent twice what I did, pulled the motor to put on $1800 headers, and made a whopping 270 HP at the wheels.
Now his transmission is shot. $3000 to replace it. Go figure.
In my opinion, you go with modern technology with the best aftermarket support, and screw the purists. You are putting money in this, and you have to live with it.

For the Mopar purist, we first put a 2011 5.7 hemi and 545 RFE trans and fooled with it for three years and never got it tuned right. We sent the computer to many tuners and took the car to some with the hemi in it. Finally gave up and put the LS in it. Tons more room and everything's better. Anyone want to buy a 12k mile hemi?

I shot you a PM. I'm starting my walk down the LS road in August for my 75 Swinger. I crunched the numbers on a GEN III hemi swap for the last year and couldn't fathom spending 3 to 4 times as much as it would cost me to do the LS swap. My car not anyone else's so the purists can fly kites. If your friend could share those pics please pm me and let me know and ill shoot you my email. Thanks, looking forward to finally pull the /6 out and moving back into something with some power again.
edit: just picked up a set of the turbo manifolds like Adam's up above, so hoping that takes care of the steering box clearance issue when I get the motor in place.

You might want to talk to HemiDenny over at ForAllBitchesOnly. His tubular front end is nice. He will be making up mounts to put an LS in with his k-frame
