Ok, I'm finishing up my LS6 swap into my 67 Camaro and I'm having some trouble keeping it running. Then engine fires right up and the idle attempts to adjust then it dies after 5-7 seconds. Almost like I turned off the key. It will do this over and over again but won't stay running. Could it be the VATS? I pulled all that wiring out of the harness and grounded the yellow/black wire thinking that would bypass it, is that the right approach? Should I have the VATS programmed out of the ECU? Not sure where to start with this one, this is my first LS swap. I'm just glad it fired up on the first attempt! Drinking my beer now waiting for help from you guys! ![Hail](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_hail.gif)

ECU is from a 2000 Fbody, motor is actually from the same car, but it now has an LS6 intake and heads, plus a comp cam. From what I understand, the VATS won't even let the car crank if the key is not right. I eliminated all that wiring when I did the harness and grounded to yellow/black wire from that circuit. I've checked all the grounds and they seem fine, the fuel pressure is steady at 61psi on the rails. It cranks and fires right up, then just stops almost every time at 5 secs. You can actually hear the idle air valve attempting to trim the idle before it dies. It's almost like I turned the key off.

Turn off the vats in the PCM or buy a signal generator (50Hz) to trick the PCM into thinking the correct key is being used. You should be able to find someone on the board or locally to program. If not, give us a call.

Are you still having the problem? If so, listen to "groundczero" and at least look into the steering column lock issue. We worked on this for 3 weeks, and probably still would be had he not had the same issue. We are running a 98 LS1 and computer from a Vette.) In our case, even the tuner wasn't familiar with this potential issue. Our tuner uses EFI Live and when setting the program, it asks the question:"steering column lock installed?" For an automatic trans unit, the correct answer is "NO". For a manual trans unit, the correct answer is "YES". Not sure it all makes sense, but setting this parameter correctly works and the engine is running with no issues! Good Luck!

I'll look into that as well. I need to get into the ECU with a programer to see what's up. The harness is from a 2000 M6 car, and it was running well when it was all pulled. It's in a 67 camaro now with a manual trans. The VSS is the only thing not emissions related that isn't hooked up.

Do the f-bodies have column lock? If the PCM thinks the steering column is locked up it won't let the car even start. In a C5 you try and start it and the DIC reads, "PULL KEY WAIT 10 SECONDS" then it usually will lock up and read "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK".
I have it bypassed in the racecar so that it won't produce a MIL on the dash... I also had it tuned out via the PCM when I finally had the car tuned. Technically I could sell the bypass kit now. I actually cut the pin that locks the column on mine... kept acting up at the cage builder's shop.

Guarantee its the VATS.
You need to do as Jon indicated, either get a signal generator or have VATS turned off via a tune.
Don't waste your time on anything else, that's exactly what VATS does.
