While I love G bodies and 510's they are getting scarce at least Mustang's are plentiful. My choice was made by weight(2800lbs for my 1978 242) and wheelbase 104.3", they are very stiff for a uni-body car without any strut bars or cages, and they are cheap!

I agree with the volvo idea. I'd probably do a 240 if it were me, or even a 740 if I could find one cheap. The fox body seems to make the most sense though, since the swap has been done so many times, and it's "cheap". -or at least that's how all swaps start...

1991 Caprice with big ls power would make the perfect drift car. I used to have one with just a junk 350 and that thing would hang er out like a champ and was very predictable sideways too

Anything that is a wagon would be badass. Think That Seventies Show....Drift Vista Cruiser...awesome! And you could drift with all your friends in the car LOL and carry plenty of spare tires and tools.

I second a Datsun 510. Something with the old school muscle look but in a import body. Maybe even a Nissan Skyline 2000GT, BMW 2002, or something of that sort. Or why not a S2000.. I dont know just throwing stuff out there I think would be cool.

My vote is for a Cressida. Came with a straight 6 so there is plenty of room. Already rear wheels drive. Debadge it and it looks like a camry.

I like the 510 and wagon idea as well. I cant find a good body cheap wagon locally though (any make)!
Foxbody crossed my mind, but not a fan of the style.
F-body was researched and found that they are terrible! It will slide, but not be competitive due to geometry setup!
Caprice turned into a cop car drift setup! FTW!

Are you looking to be different or competitive? You can't have both without deep pockets.

For cheap fun you already have the right equation with the BMW. If you want to go wild, one of my dream builds have always been a Luv truck. Put the suspension and subframes from a 240 or FC RX7 front and rear under it for a package that is drift worthy and completely awesome!

Edit: I found a local car for you, 1974 Pinto!
