How to get a temp signal hey there i hope i am not asking this question for the 100 time. but i have a 1985 CJ7. I put a 2004 5.3 LSX in it. all runs good but i want to run the stock temp gage in the dash, this gage is with the oil, speed, and milage. I don't really want to drill a hole for a new temp gage but there has to b a way. i got both temp sending units for the old motor and the new 5.3. the old sending unit off the 6 cylinder is way to big to adapt in the passenger side of head. There has to b a way.
also there are two wires coming off the 5.3 sending temp unit. how do i wire that up to check of it could work?

On my jeep I used an adapter from autometer that threaded into the pass side head behind the exhaust manifold flange. It's a 12mm hole there and the adapter allowed me to screw in the 1/8" NPT temp sender I took off the old jeep motor.

awesome!! all are great spots to put my temp sending unit. I will post where i put this thing and how well it works. a quick question on these electric sending units, one wire goes to the gage. what is the other go to. is it a ground or a hot? i usually use the mechanical gages and not too much on these electric. thanks to all.

I used a 3 wire sensor. U just have to buy the sensor and a pigtail but it fits in the stock location on the head. One of the wires goes to your stock gauge. Not sure if the ohms of the sensor are exactly the same as a jeep but it worked for me. I'll try to post a link to a video with all the info.

Ok got it done, works good FOR ME. I went to my local chevy shop and asked for a old water pump ( they gave it to me ). I than had fun drilling into the pump in different ports to find my right spot to tap in my jeep sending unit. I placed heavy baring grease on drill and tap for no shavings got in the pump. This placement is the hot side of the port. Another place to tap the 5.3 is the aux hose neck out. (IF you have this aux port, my 5.3 motor does not)
How it reads?? Will I'm close enough for me for i only have a cold to hot gage and do not want to change for i like the looks of the stock gages. This port is the hot side of the pump BUT it also has the cold coming in from the radiator and puts the pump tump 20-30 degrees cooler. so not a good spot for the temp gages WITH the temp numbers.

i used a 3 pin temp sensor i bought off ebay. it comes with a mini harness. the engine harness plugs into to it for the ECU & there's an extra wire that runs to your gauge. i used this in my swap into my truck & plan on using the same setup on my IS300 swap.
