Default heads for lq4

looking for some sound advice just in case I'm missing something.

I have a '04 LQ4 in my s10. it's cammed, tuned, headers. stock 317 heads though.

I'm looking to make more bottom end since this vehicle is a rock crawler so I was looking at either milling the 317s or buy some 243s. I can have the milling done cheaper than buying 243s so I was wondering if there's truly any issue with milling the 317s or spend more on the 243s? figure a higher compression would make a nice difference

cam specs are
230/224
LSA 112+2
.591/.581

the rig

I vote for ported ls6 heads, milled for some added compression

I'm happy with my PRC 243's they are only CNC'd and not milled. Of course if you pay a little more you can have some aftermarket castings but that's a different story

seems everyone is happy with the 243s, but what if I can save money by doing work on the 317s? trying to see if its worth it or does it put me too close for clearance with the cam and such?

Another thing to think about steve is intake manifold fitment issues depending on how much you have milled off of course.

I vote a set of 243's, thats what im going to do with my nova thats getting the lq4 in it. It will be setup real similar to your engine.

the thing with the 317s vs 243s is the ls6 heads will flow slightly better, and they are gonna give you more compression

I have a set of 243's milled for ls6 11.1 so i don't know what they would be on your lq4. Ported by JR Motorsports LTD heres the specs and my listing

https://post.craigslist.org/manage/3633298135/kxyz9

Head have around 6k on them. I would still clean them up and have them checked out

Ported by JR Motorsports LTD.
They were mostly cleaned up and could flow alot more with a good polish
Will come with flow chart, basic numbers are

They were also milled to 11.1 compression

PRC Valve Springs with Titanium Retainers
Install Height: 1.810"
Closed Spring Pressure: 144 lb. @ 1.810" Installed Height
Open Spring Pressure: 402 lb. @ .600" lift
Open Spring Pressure: 425 lb. @ .650" lift
Maximum Spring Lift: .650"
Coil Bind 1.080"
Spring Rate: 469lbs/in

Come with hardened 7.4 pushrods and stock rockers and rails. I can remember pushrod brand but they cost 170.00

Looking for 700.00 obo

sorry I missed the previous post.

really leaning towards milling the 317s since it's easier on the wallet. any reason to go away from doing this and maybe do a dfferent cam?

the dyno will tell us soon how it's running and which direction to really go.

any more input?

You can usually find 799 heads a little cheaper than 243 heads and they are exactly the same head...799 heads came on later 5.3 engines
