Default 5.3 swap

76 C-10 thinking about doing a engine swap. Removing the old 350 and replacing it with the Gen lll 5.3 Any advice? Is it hard to do?

This is getting to be a common swap. Motor Mounts, Harness, Fuel System Upgrade, PCM tune. One advantage to the trucks is the hood clearance doesn't force you to switch to an LS1 style intake manifold, you can keep the truck one so cost stays down. Jon on an older vehicle like this, typically how many wires from your harness need to be hooked up on the body side of things? I have seen some manufacturers claim only 5 wires (other than the engine). Is this about right?

Its a really easy swap! i am in the process of doing this same swap right now. i am building my own harness from a take out. It is very easy but also very time consuming to make sure its 100% right. I definately recommend Jon with Psi, he has been helping me out a lot with very useful info. Check out my thread i just posted.

Sarge,

Typically the harness only needs constant power, switched power and ground. However, we do provide additional wires, some are optional others are recommended. The recommended wires include check engine light and tcc (if electronic automatic).

Gotcha. And does a 2000 "411" pcm supply an oil pressure signal or is it typically straight from sensor to gauge?

You generally wont find a 0411 pcm in a 2000 vehicle. They were very common in the 01 and 02 vehicles.

The pcm does not provide an oil pressure signal to a gauge, if the signal is provided from the pcm it comes over the data bus. In the early gen 3 vehicles the oil pressure signal came directly from the sender to the gauge. The factory sender signal is not compatable with aftermarket gauges. Most generally the gauge manufacturer will provide a sender for this application.

Well then your oil pressure signal will come directly from your sender to your gauge set pigtail.

We have some of the f-body gage pinouts on our website www.psiconversion.com/diagrams.html We are constantly adding a number of schematics to this page to help people with their swaps. Just an FYI, we sell a pigtail for the f-body gage cluster if you dont have one and even if you do, our instructions for the cluster will detail how you can wire it up. Signal comes from the Serial Data wire. Typically people splice into it on the OBDII port.

Ok, little confused now. Does the sender feed the ecu a signal and then the ecu feeds the fbody gauge cluster?

Some of the gauge signals still have a separate signal, and some of the gauge signals come over the serial data wire.

When you examine the connector pinout you will notice that there are some gauges that do not have a pigtail, these gauges come over the data bus. The gauge leads that still have a pigtail, you will wire the sender or signal wire to that lead.

If you look at our instruction sheet you can see that oil pressure and vehicle speed go to the gage cluster via separate wires. The remaining items such as coolant temp rpm and fuel level come over the serial data wire.
